Schoolhouse Fall MUN 2024 - SOCHUM Committee

    Ended Sun, Nov 17, 2024

Welcome to the SOCHUM Committee sessions of the Schoolhouse Fall Model United Nations 2024! Schoolhouse MUN is an online Model United Nations event organized by a team of volunteers from schoolhouse.world. Delegates will have the opportunity to represent different countries in six distinct committees of the United Nations. This experience will enhance their understanding of current world issues and improve their public speaking, collaboration, and leadership skills. Agenda: The Global Refugee Crisis: Ensuring Protection and Integration Crafting strategies for safeguarding refugees and enhancing their integration into host communities. Chairs: Aadya S and Jil S Overview of the Committee’s Agenda: Today, over 100 million people have been displaced worldwide, fleeing persecution, conflict, and natural disasters. For many, the struggle to escape is only the beginning of their journey. Refugees face daunting challenges at every step—an endless quest for safety, stability, and a place to call home. In regions like the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa, entire generations are growing up far from their homelands, awaiting a future that remains uncertain. This humanitarian crisis persists, highlighting both the strength of the human spirit and the gaps in global support systems. As delegates of SOCHUM, your task is to delve into how international frameworks can better protect refugees and ensure that integration efforts are both compassionate and sustainable. You’ll be asked to consider the root causes, the ethical responsibilities of host nations, and how to create solutions that are both just and practical. Engage in rigorous debates, challenge each other’s ideas, and remember that real change begins with dialogue. Together, let’s take a stand for those whose voices too often go unheard. Are you prepared to take on this humanitarian mission? Main Series: https://schoolhouse.world/series/28597 Please note that delegates must attend a minimum of three committee sessions to be eligible for a participation certificate. Audience members are welcome to join and observe the proceedings! We look forward to your participation!

Debate Summer School

    Ended Mon, Aug 22, 2022

In our Debate Summer School we use thought experiments, debates and discussions to sharpen your analytical skills, introduce you to new ideas, and give you the confidence they need to argue effectively. The subjects we discuss and debate on will range from topical issues - for example climate change, to moral problems from everyday life - for example payment for children's work, to big questions which have plagued philosophers for centuries such as the nature of truth and reality for example is there a God? There is no one correct answer – only the ability to ask questions to gain a wider understanding, a range of methods to tackle you with, and the requirement to think logically and give reasons for your arguments. Informal group discussions allow you to get to grips with some challenging ideas in a relaxed environment. You can also make friends. Seminar debates on moral issues such as “Is it wrong to steal if I am poor and hungry?”, “Can it ever be right to kill one person if you save lots of others?”, “Should the government ban smoking?”, “Is animal testing in the name of science OK?” Interactive thought experiments tackling issues such as “How do we know if we’re dreaming” and “What makes me the same person I was yesterday?” and "Is the world an illusion?". The tutor – Jil Shah – has achieved a percentage of 100% throughout her philosophy, religion and ethics course - her students say she is friendly, approachable, and experienced working with people of all ages - whether older than her, the same age or younger! Working larger or smaller groups, they will help students navigate through these fascinating and complex debates, and will explain the issues at the right pace for them. PREREQUISITES: You must know what debate is, must be comfortable to switch on your mic and share your points and you must be willing to attend all the sessions. DEBATE GROUP 2: If you want to be part of group 2, you must have some experience in debate. EQUIPMENT: You must have a pen and paper to take notes! MORE SESSIONS will be added.
