Schoolhouse MUN 2025 - DISEC
Welcome to the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) sessions of the Schoolhouse Model United Nations 2025!
Schoolhouse MUN is an online Model United Nations event organized by a team of volunteers from schoolhouse.world. Delegates will have the opportunity to represent different countries in five distinct committees of the United Nations. This experience will enhance their understanding of current world issues and improve their public speaking, collaboration, and leadership skills.
Agenda: Assessing state-sponsored cyber warfare and its threats to international security
Developing international strategies to combat state-sponsored cyber warfare and take actions to restrict and de-escalate such issues to maintain international security
Chairs: Anshu P & Jack R
Overview of the Committee’s Agenda:
State-sponsored cyber attacks are malicious digital operations conducted by hackers who are either directly employed by a government or indirectly funded by it. Such cyberattacks are typically used to achieve strategic, economic, or military intelligence against the organizations of other nations. In addition to data theft, these cyberattacks pose risks such as the potential loss of infrastructure and disruptions to power grids.
Cyber attacks are common and can have a negative impact on countries, businesses, and individuals. Governments rightly recognize cyber warfare as a growing and real threat that can be initiated even by the smallest countries lacking conventional military capabilities. Often, the origin of cyber attacks does not clearly point to a specific state, complicating the situation further.
A few significant incidents in the past include Stuxnet, a malicious computer worm believed to have caused substantial damage to the Iranian nuclear program and often referred to as the world’s first cyber weapon; the SolarWinds attack (2020 United States federal government data breach); and the Lazarus Group attacks, including the Bangladesh Bank heist.
The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly that focuses on issues related to disarmament, global security, and threats to international peace. As delegates, it is your responsibility to explore how, why, when, and to what extent DISEC can and must act. Engage in vigorous discussions, challenge each other's perspectives, and ask those hard-hitting questions. Through assertive diplomacy and united action, you have the power to confront one of the world’s most pressing issues.
