About

Each week, we'll go over 1-2 components of the AP English Literature exam to help you feel as confident as possible! We'll be going over how to find your own magic formulas for essays, different ways to analyze prose & poetry, as well as personalized strategies for the MCQ section. AP Lit is a difficult class with a (considerably even more) difficult exam–there's no doubt about it. However, I wholeheartedly believe anyone can succeed if they dedicate themselves, even if literature may not be your cup of tea :,)

About the Tutor

Hi! My name is Mariana, but I usually go by Mari :) I'm a senior in a dual enrollment-specialized high school and my SAT score stands within the 99th percentile. Over my time in the American school system, I've learned that improvement is always possible as long as you understand what works for you and how to take full advantage of your resources. I adore pre-20th century literature, as well as philosophy. I hope that by being here I may help others in all academic endeavors!

Today, we'll be focusing on our Poetry Analysis Essay (Q1). We will be working through a prompt together and discussing strategies for picking a poem (pesky, I know) apart efficiently. Be prepared to take notes and jot down ideas. You may do this online or on paper, I don't mind.

Session 4

Essay Writing

Today, we'll be focusing on our Literary Argument Essay (Q3). Since we may not have all read the same books, we'll be talking about ways that we can approach a Q3 and how to structure our essays instead of focusing on a specific prompt. Please be sure to have something to write with, whether it be online or on paper.

Session 7

Essay Writing

Today we'll be writing a Q1 and Q2 Essay back to back to get a feel for the AP Lit Exam. To practice with accurate time limitations, this is all we'll be doing during this session. You may type or write the essays in accordance with your preference. (If you are registered to take the paper-based exam, I highly recommend getting yourself used to handwriting such a large amount within a rather small time frame. Hand cramps in the middle of a Q2 are NOT fun. Trust me, I know.)

Session 8

Essay Writing

Today we'll be going over the essays you all wrote last session and reflecting on our experiences writing the essays back to back. We will run through what you all wrote with the group and use this time to discuss what we've succeeded in/what we need to work on. Please don't work on the essay outside of last session's time frame! Not finishing an essay is okay, as long as we identify what went wrong. There is never shame in that!

Session 9

Essay Writing

Today we'll be going over a brief selection of books I recommend to read outside of school to build a "safety mattress" for your Q3 Essays. As you'll find out, I call these Q3 Gold Mines. These are books that cover a wide range of themes and easily make great foundations for a beautiful essay.

Session 10

English Exams

Today we'll be working on a full(ish) practice test. I will create the assessment utilizing about 30 MCQ questions and all 3 essay prompts. However, you will not need to write the full essays. You'll only be writing down your thesis, claims, evidence groups, and potential sophistication point shots (extended metaphors/tensions/broader contexts) as if you were planning the essays. Please do not search up the answers to the questions! You'll more than likely find them, but that won't help you when I ask about your thought process and/or mix up the questions. More importantly, that won't help you succeed by any means. Just a heads up :)

Session 11

Today we'll be reviewing your practice tests! We'll run through what went well, what went wrong, and how confident we feel as of now. If any of you would like to schedule extra mini-sessions, we can discuss that now.

Closing session! Today will only serve to discuss final pointers and words of encouragement :) You all have worked so hard for your goals; I'm more than confident in your abilities!
