How ethical are synthetic biology and cloning? How can AI be used to address healthcare disparities? What unintended consequences could it have? Why are scientists releasing billions of mosquitoes to the wild?

You can expect some of what will be discussed to look like those questions -- none are limited to biology and I will be receptive to topics you guys can offer! Please participate in this informal series, ready to learn, for fun!!

My hope with this series is that you not only improve your scientific literacy but also your communication and critical thinking skills, which will be applicable in any field you choose to pursue, science or not. Towards the end of the series, we will provide dedicated learners with an exciting FUN project that you WON’T want to miss!

General Structure of Meetings (may vary):
1) Concise overview, key aspects, relevance and current implications of topic
2) Random breakout rooms; each group will explore a specific aspect of the topic in more detail
3) Reconvene: Each group (representative or shared) will share their key insights (this will be important for the guided discussion) 
4) Guided discussion with prepared critical questions based on everyone's input; there will also be follow-up questions
5) Your final thoughts/reflections; summarization of main insights, questions, and conclusions
6) Topics you want to see in the future: put them in the chat!
7) Post-meeting discussion forum with a burning question in the SHW group chat related to the topic (short ~1-2 sentence response)

Expectations and Prerequisites: Just come ready to actively learn and contribute from and to the discussion. Whether you have all the science experience in the world or just beginning to see what science offers, everyone is welcome to engage and have fun in our informal series; all you need to bring to meetings is your enthusiasm for science!

Daily 20-Minute Vocab!

In just 20 minutes every day, go on a journey with me as we work through countless amounts of advanced words! Some example words that we will be learning are: haggard, moribund, roguish, and so many more! 

Expected materials: Paper, pencil, pen
Prerequisites: N/A

I will go over how each session will be run in the first session, so be sure to attend that! If you are joining after that first session and are interested in taking on this habit, please message me privately, and I will be able to send you all the details.

I currently have 337 words lined up to learn; we probably will not get to all of them, but depending on how long we stick to this together, we just might and might even go beyond!!

In each session, we will be learning a NEW word and REVIEWING past learned words in a spaced repetition pattern. The most words that we will touch in a given day will be 4.

Come take on a brand new habit and develop some new disciplinarian and perspicacious practices!!

Preparing for Algebra 2 (Common Core)

Are you taking Algebra 2 and are not sure where to start to prepare for the class? If this sounds familiar, then this series is perfect for you! Each week, we will be looking at some big ideas in Algebra 2, so that you are not completely clueless as you walk in the classroom. This series will be covered during the school year so that you can bring your questions as we cover all the content. 

Prerequisites: Having already taken Algebra 1 is HIGHLY recommended before signing up for this course.

I will be using the NY Algebra 2 curriculum to guide us through the must-knows (which can be further emphasized throughout your school year in Algebra 2), and we will go through practice problems together. To explain more conceptual topics, I will also have a whiteboard prepared, so if it helps to grasp ideas, I recommend you to have a *paper and pen/pencil* ready before each session.

Preparing for AP®/College Chemistry

Are you taking the infamous AP® Chemistry next year and are not sure where to start to prepare for the class? If this sounds familiar, then this series is perfect for you! Each week, we will be understanding the big picture in each unit, so that when you walk into class, you are not completely clueless. 

I will be using the College Board's official Course and Exam Description to guide us through the must-knows (which can be further emphasized throughout your school year in AP® Chemistry), and we will go through practice problems on Khan Academy together. To explain more conceptual topics, I will also have a whiteboard prepared, so if it helps to grasp ideas, I recommend you to have a paper and pen/pencil ready before each session. 

If you want to self-study AP® Chemistry, which will be a huge challenge, I highly recommend the following resources:

NOTE: Each unit session is tentatively set to be 90 minutes each, but depending on the content to be covered, the sessions could be as short as 45 minutes or as long as 130 minutes.
