Alexander responded flexibly to learner input, such as affirming and building on advice shared by students about test-optional strategies or recommendation etiquette . He also adjusted time for activities (e.g., shortening work periods to fit the session flow). This adaptability kept the lesson on track. One improvement would be checking in more frequently with quieter participants, to ensure understanding and encourage contributions from a wider group.

I really loved your feedback and the resources you shared this session! The humor throughout the session was on point (as always), and the 10 minutes after the session to go over details about majors and how I can craft my story were also phenomenal: they gave me a clearer idea of showing myself in my best without compromising on impactful activities I've participated in. Can't wait for the next!

I loved the explanation about choosing the most important activities on the activities list. I took a lot of time to experiment before figuring out what I really care about and what really excites me, so I had many potential roles to put (unfortunately way more than 10), but the advice on thinking about the impact, the learning experiences, and the time spent gave me an idea of what I want the college to know about my authentic self. Looking forward to our coming sessions!

It is evident that Maryam understood the concepts Alexander helped her with and made progress, as she explicitly stated that, after the session, she could solve similar problems on her own.

Alexander created a positive and supportive atmosphere by validating student comments, making light jokes, and sharing his own personal experiences with college admissions . This built trust and normalized student uncertainty. He also spent extra time after the official session helping a learner think through interdisciplinary interests, showing genuine care and mentorship . To strengthen connections even further, he could explicitly highlight student insights (“That’s a strong strategy, here’s why…”) so learners feel their contributions are valued as part of the collective learning.

This session was highly informative and helped me observe how senior tutors act so that I can mimic them when I have to tutor later.

In the session, Alexander started by asking Maryam if she already knew some of the topics needed to answer her questions (e.g. derivative of arcsin(x)) and used this information to fill any knowledge gaps he found to enable her to answer the questions independently. Additionally, when she forgot a term of the equation she was solving he did not directly tell her that she was wrong. Rather, he told her to reconsider her answer while guiding her towards the correct one. Every time he explained a topic, he asked her whether she understood his approach to confirm her progress. Lastly, after explaining inverse functions to Maryam, Alexander engaged her in the learning process by asking her to answer the questions herself instead of just giving her the correct answer.
