Dialogues club 🧠: Personality vs. Genetics

    Starts

Have you ever taken a personality test and found it interesting? This club is a space for students to discuss topics related to psychology, neuroscience, and human behavior. Each meeting will focus on one central question, such as how much of our personality is genetic. The goal is to encourage open conversation and critical thinking about how the brain works, how people think, and why we behave the way we do. Everyone is welcome to participate and share their perspectives! 🧠Dialogues Discussion Guide Topic: How much of our personality is actually genetic? Which stance best describes your view: Our personality is mostly determined by genetics and biology (nature). Our personality is mostly shaped by experiences and environment (nurture). It's a mix of both nature and nurture, but one side might have more influence. Neutral/undecided Optional Resources (if you want to share ahead of time): “Is Personality Genetic?” – Psychology Today “The Nature vs. Nurture Debate” – Verywell Mind “The Big Five Personality Traits” – Simply Psychology Discussion Agenda: 🧊 Ice Breakers (5 minutes) 🤔 Initial Views & Personal Influences (5–10 minutes) 🌐 Differing Perspectives (10–20 minutes) 🧠 Reflection (5 minutes) 📣 Survey (5 minutes) Discussion Questions 🧊 Ice Breakers (5 minutes) Share your name, where you're from, and whether this is your first Dialogues conversation. Optional icebreaker questions: What’s your favorite class and why? If you could instantly become an expert in anything, what would it be? What’s one thing about yourself you think is unique? 🤔 Initial Views & Personal Influences (5–10 minutes) Which stance do you currently agree with most regarding personality and genetics? Choose at least one of the following to explore: Have you ever taken a personality test like the Big Five or MBTI? What were your results, and did they feel accurate? Do you think people can change their personality, or are they mostly stuck with how they are? Do you feel like your family environment shaped who you are today? Or do you think you were always this way, even as a kid? 🌐 Differing Perspectives (10–20 minutes) Steelman the opposing view: If you and your partner agree, work together to explain the strongest possible version of the other side. If you disagree, take turns doing it for each other. Questions to explore: Are there parts of your personality that seem to go against your upbringing or environment? Do you think genetics can explain traits like intelligence, creativity, or risk-taking? Can trauma or major life events reshape someone’s core personality? What role does culture or community play in shaping identity? Is there a “true self” underneath all of our experiences? 🧠 Reflection (5 minutes) What did you appreciate about your conversation partner’s perspective? What was something they said that made you think differently? What do you still feel unsure about or want to explore more? Did you and your partner agree or disagree on the topic overall? 📣 Post-Discussion Survey Be sure to complete the post-discussion survey. Your feedback helps improve future sessions. Discussion Guidelines 🙇 Respect: Be kind even if you disagree. 👂 Listen: Don’t dominate the convo. Give everyone a turn. 💞 Empathy: Try to understand where others are coming from. 💡 Curiosity: Ask questions and explore ideas, not just defend your own. 🎨 Authenticity: Be honest and open. 💫 Ownership: Keep the conversation productive and on-topic. 🤐 Confidentiality: Don’t share personal info about your partner with others.
