About

We take Search for granted (the wonders of Google!!). But how does it work? We’ll explore the key concepts in this two-session Summer Camp. Three things to note: 1. This series will use the “flipped classroom” design — there will be (a small amount of) homework prior to each session, so that we can utilize session time for discussion and working together. 2. Well will explore Search using pseudocode, and will not directly code in any specific programming language (Python, Javascript, etc.). 3. Our keywords are “fun, stimulating and rigorous.” Our goal — that each of us have an “aha” moment at some point during this short Series.

Tutor Qualifications

I've been programming for decades, primarily with databases to support my job and for a client. More recently, I've taken courses through Coursera (Algorithms, Machine Learning), CS50 and SHW (Principled Programming).

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

Pretty simple ...

* Skip the “homework” for the first session (watching the video) — you’ve made your decision (stay home)

• Attend both sessions -- absolutely wonderful. I hope you’ve found this an interesting and rewarding Summer Camp!

* Attend the first session, but not the second — your loss (from my perspective)

* Miss the first session? Game over.

About the Tutor

I’m a rock climber, teacher and business person living in Portland, OR. My work has focused on nurturing learning — through the purposeful use of assignments in organizations, and through the pursuit of practical, engaging projects in the classroom. I look forward to meeting and working with you in SHW sessions.

Session 1

Computer Science

The ‘homework’ will be to watch a video segment from David Malan’s CS50 course that focuses on Search (linear and binary). (The link and specifics will be posted at least one week before our session). We’ll discuss this, and then use pseudo-code to explore the thinking behind each type of Search in some depth.

Session 2

Computer Science

The ‘homework’ will be to pick a dimension of Search that is of interest to you, and dig into it. I’ll expand upon this — with some examples — at the end of the first session. In the second session, each of us will have an opportunity to describe our exploration, so we can discuss and learn from it.
