About

Are you planning to take pre-algebra this coming school year? Are you taking algebra 1 this coming year, but still unsure about some topics? This is the series for you! I'll cover the main concepts of pre-algebra over the course of the summer and we'll work together to prepare you for your next math class, whatever that may be. Each session will be a mix of content learning with brief slideshows, practice problems, and occasionally math games and assessments. Looking forward to seeing people there!

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

Please try not to miss more than two sessions in a row, it could take the place of another learner! Also, feel free to message me if for whatever reason, you are unable to make it to a session.

About the Tutor

Hi, I'm Lily (any pronouns), and I'm a university freshman! I'm from Massachusetts, lived in Washington for a few years, and now I'm back for university. My favorite subjects are any science, but especially biology, math, and languages. Some of my other interests are drawing, painting, video games, programming, and D&D.

Jul

Session 2

Factors and multiples

We'll go over factors and multiples to start building a solid foundation of what is needed for more complex topics in pre-algebra. *Subject to change*
16
Jul

Session 3

Patterns

We'll go over different types of patterns and where they are seen later on in both pre-algebra and higher math.. *Subject to change*
20
Jul

Session 4

Exponents intro and order of operations

We'll go over order of operations (ignore exponents intro in the title, that's later) and their importance in expressions and equations. *Subject to change*
23
Jul

Session 5

Ratios and rates

We'll go over ratios, rates, and percentages and discuss where they could be applied and where we most commonly see them (science, finances, health, etc.). *Subject to change*
27
Jul

Session 6

Roots, exponents, & scientific notation

We'll go over exponents and basic exponent rules, roots (starting with square roots and cube roots, more if time permits), and how they relate. We'll also briefly see what they mean in real-life, and how they will relate to algebraic equations. *Subject to change*
31
Jul

Session 7

Roots, exponents, & scientific notation

We'll continue from last time by going over scientific notation and how it connects to roots and exponents, as well as its real-world applications. *Subject to change*
3
Aug

Session 8

Variables & expressions

We'll go over what variables are and their importance in algebra, as well as talk about where else you might see a variable. We'll also be introduced to expressions to prepare for full equations. *Subject to change*
6
Aug

Session 9

One-step and two-step equations & inequalities

We'll go over one-step and two-step equations (and inequalities), two of the foundational types, and work on some practice problems to get them hang of them. *Subject to change*
10
Aug

Session 10

Proportional relationships

We'll go over proportions and proportional relationships as a full introduction to solving equations, as it's one of the most foundation types. We'll look into how proportions are represented in real life and how you can use proportional relationships in your every-day. *Subject to change*
13
Aug

Session 11

Multi-step equations

We'll go over multi-step equations that are different in complexity, building off of what we already know about one-step, two-step, and proportional equations to solve more complex equations and work together on some practice problems. *Subject to change*
17
Aug

Session 12

Two-variable equations

We'll go over equations with two different variables and discuss how they will relate to future topics in algebra. These practice problems will likely focus more on word problems to understand how the two variables are linked. *Subject to change*
20
Aug

Session 13

Functions and linear models

We'll go over functions and linear (graphed) models to see these two-variable equations more in action. We'll also relate how functions (even the most basic ones) can be used in other fields like science and economics to analyze and show results. *Subject to change*
24
Aug

Session 14

Systems of equations

We'll go over the basics of systems of equations, using what we know about two variable equations to solve them, and learn about the three main methods of solving. *Subject to change*
27
Aug

Session 15

General Pre-Algebra Q&A

We'll go over any extra questions you have after having covered all the main topics! This session is completely optional, but recommended if you're still a little confused on something or just want to ask a fun question!
