About

This is an Algebra I summer series which will cover all the major topics in the span of a single month:
1. Solving equations and inequalities
2. Linear equations
3. Inequalities
4. Functions
5. Piecewise functions and absolute values
6. Exponents and radicals
7. Exponential growth and decay
8. Quadratics: multiplying and factoring
9. Quadratics: functions and graphs

At the end of every session there will be a game of Gimkit to help students review what was covered in class. Before every class there will be a brief review of the previous lessons to ensure everyone's understanding.

SESSION 1

Solving equations & inequalities

Solving equations & inequalities

Fri 5:15 PM - 6:25 PM UTCJun 6, 5:15 PM - 6:25 PM UTC

During the first session, we will be solving basic two variable equations using methods like elimination and substitution. Students are taught the common steps to take in solving equations on word problems and learn about recognizing and creating equations. At the end there will be a Gimkit on the covered material in the session.

SESSION 2

Linear equations & graphs

Linear equations & graphs

Sat 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTCJun 7, 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTC

Students are taught about the components, formats, and graphs of linear equations with prepared slides to deepen their understanding. There will be a Gimkit at the end on converting graphs into equations, recognizing formats, and finding intercepts of linear equations.

SESSION 3

Inequalities (systems & graphs)

Inequalities (systems & graphs)

Tue 5:15 PM - 6:05 PM UTCJun 10, 5:15 PM - 6:05 PM UTC

We will cover the rules of inequalities and how they differ from equations. I will go over the common points of mistakes student make with them as well as how to properly solve and graph them. In the end there will be a Gimkit where the students are to select correct equations on the given graphs, solve for variables, and answer questions about the rules of inequalities.

SESSION 4

Functions

Functions

Fri 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTCJun 13, 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTC

We will cover the basics of functions, including function notation, inputs and outputs, and the difference between functions and regular equations. I will go over common mistakes students make, such as confusing f(x) with multiplication, misapplying the vertical line test, or mixing up domain and range. We’ll also practice evaluating functions for given inputs, writing functions from real-world scenarios, and graphing simple linear functions. At the end, there will be a Gimkit where students match functions to their correct graphs, evaluate outputs for given inputs, and answer true/false questions about function rules (like "Can a function have two y-values for one x-value?").

SESSION 5

Absolute value & piecewise functions

Absolute value & piecewise functions

Sat 5:15 PM - 6:25 PM UTCJun 14, 5:15 PM - 6:25 PM UTC

We will cover how to solve absolute value equations and inequalities, including how they create "V"-shaped graphs and why they often have two solutions. I'll explain common mistakes students make, such as forgetting to isolate the absolute value first, mishandling the ± cases, or incorrectly flipping inequality signs. Then, we'll explore piecewise functions—how to read them, evaluate them at specific points, and graph their different "pieces" based on the input rules.

SESSION 6

Exponents & radicals

Exponents & radicals

Tue 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTCJun 17, 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTC

We will cover the laws of exponents (product rule, power rule, negative exponents) and how to simplify expressions with radicals and rational exponents. I'll go over the most common mistakes students make, such as misapplying exponent rules, forgetting to simplify radicals completely, or confusing operations like multiplication versus addition of exponents. We'll also practice converting between radical and exponential form, solving basic radical equations, and rationalizing denominators. At the end there will be a Gimkit to practice what we learned in the lesson.

SESSION 7

Exponential growth & decay

Exponential growth & decay

Fri 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTCJun 20, 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTC

We will explore real-world applications of exponential functions, focusing on how they model growth (like populations or investments) and decay (like radioactive substances or depreciation). I’ll highlight common student pitfalls—such as confusing exponential vs. linear rates, misusing the growth and decay formulas, or misinterpreting half-life/doubling time. At the end there will be a challenging Gimkit on what we covered.

SESSION 8

Quadratics: Multiplying & factoring

Quadratics: Multiplying & factoring

Sat 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTCJun 21, 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTC

In this session, we will go the basics of quadratic equations and how we find the solutions by factoring using the FOIL method. We will learn how a quadratic equation is made by breaking it down with factoring strategies such as difference of squares and grouping. At the end of the session, students will play an engaging game of Gimkit to deepen their understanding.

SESSION 9

Quadratic functions & equations

Quadratic functions & equations

Tue 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTCJun 24, 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM UTC

In this session, we will dive deeper into the quadratic formulas and learn how to graph them in a factored form. We will cover the zero product property, parabolas in vertex form, and deriving the quadratic equation. We will also explore and solve word problems that relate to quadratics. There will be a game of Gimkit near the end of the session.

SESSION 10

Quadratic functions & equations

Quadratic functions & equations

Wed 5:15 PM - 6:25 PM UTCJun 25, 5:15 PM - 6:25 PM UTC

Part two of the previous lesson, as quadratic equations are a deep concept. We will dive into the world of parabolas and the related concepts. I will present problems on scaling and shifting the graphs, and finding important features such as the minimum and maximum points.
