The Art of "Flowing"🖋⚖

Are you new to speech and debate?

We will discuss how to "flow" or take notes during the debate round. I will teach you how to use abbreviations and other tips on how to not drop a point. If you are interested in SPAR; this is the perfect addition to the skill acquired.

P/s: We will be looking at two main types, Parliamentary Debate and Policy Debate. Both have a complex argumentation nature.

SPAR Debate Workshop

Hello! Spontaneous Arguments also known as SPAR is a type of debate where the topics are silly and fun. SPAR also has a really short speaking time so it is a perfect start for all new debaters. In this session, I will be covering: how to analyze your topic given, how to effectively use your prep time, and lastly, how to take notes and do rebuttals. In the end, if we have time, I will try to have a round so we could the skills we learned. Note: We are following the SHW Speech and Debate SPAR format, 1-minute construct for both sides, 3 minutes of cross-fire, and 1-minute closing for both slides. Also in addition to 3 minutes of prep if requested for both sides.

I'm a sophomore in high school from Vietnam. I’ve been on SHW for a year and involved with Tutor Operations and the Welcoming team. I've been a competitor for over a year now. I’ve competed in Poetry Speaking, Program Oral Interp (POI), Policy and Parliamentary Debate, and more. I will be a tabula rasa, whatever is said but not refuted will go through, sometimes known as tech over truth. To win my vote, I look for clear articulation and signposting, I will be flowing, so dropping and adding arguments—is not very ideal, also, I love off-time road maps :)). I really hope to judge your round, and good luck!! Grace's Paradigm - Hi there! I’m Grace, a high school junior from Indiana. I’m also a peer reviewer and co-lead for the User Support Team. I primarily do Congress, Informative, Impromptu, and Extemporaneous. I've competed in middle and high school. I come from a more traditional style of debate. So I prefer good, substantial arguments over theory debate. If you talk with excessive speed, I will vote against you. To win my vote, I will also look for clear speaking (better evidence > more) and signposting. And I will flow too like Asher. Please don't drop/add arguments. I’m excited to hear the wonderful speeches you will deliver and enjoy our shared love for words together! 🙂

ESL Club for Vietnamese speaker

What are we going to do? 1) We will have a topic on the screen, you would have 5 minutes to do research, then we would discuss the topic in English. 2) We would do a small free discussion about a question related to the topic also, in English. 3) Lastly, we will have a small debate where you practice forming a basic paragraph about a statement given. So why I'm I here? I will be here helping you as the learner of any vocab that you might don't know or just need a place where we could all practice English. This session is ICT (Indochina Time) friendly, and it's 10:30 AM for ICT. *I mentioned this is for Vietnamese speakers, but anyone is welcome to join!
