Abigail, I thought that you did a really good job at engaging your learners throughout the session! I really appreciate that you started off by figuring out what the learner already knew/didn't know about the problem (e.g., foiling in the first problem, perpendicular slopes in the second problem). It seemed clear that you built off of what the learner knew in the rest of the session, at least to a limited extent. I also really like that you made the learner the leader of the problem, not just the participant of the problem. In other words, you let them take the initiative in the problem-solving process, with your support as necessary. For example, in the first problem, you let the learner foil the problem and then provided some support on the coefficient comparison process. Similarly, in the second problem, you explained some underlying concepts to help the learner and then let them take command of the problem. In that way, you effectively wove together what the learner already knew with your support.

Hello Abigail, hope your day is going well so far! Great job saying hello and welcoming your learners, it truly helps the learners become more comfortable with you (it does take a few seconds for the learner to join and hear you so maybe wait until like 5 seconds after to say hello). Great job handling your learner and helping them understand a complicated problem. I do suggest going through the problem with the learner slower, if they are having trouble learning the concept. I also recommend not giving them the answers right away and showing them what the squared means. (You could say something like anything to the power of 2 is the number multiplied by itself). I also recommend checking in more often if they understand the topic. I award you for helping out and providing great explanations. Overall, great job, you provided good explanations and went slower when solving a problem, later on, to make sure the learner understands. Thank you so much for tutoring at SHW! You were clear and precise in all your explanations - well done! I especially liked that you used different colors to explain the various terms when FOILing the quadratic equations to make it clear to the learners. Also, I think it was great that you went further and mentioned why (6w-y)(6w+y) was special while explaining how to expand it.

You did a good job of posing questions to the learner as a way to engage them more. For example, you asked the learner, "How do you propose we start?" which I think was really effective. Furthermore, you were able to engage them by asking questions related to the concepts in addition to questions on their understanding (Does it make sense?). Specifically, you mentioned "What fraction of the entire circle is this part?" which nicely built off of what you were going over before. Overall, you proved effective for both engaging the learner and involving them in the solution. Confirms learners' progress and checks learners' prior knowledge and not really applicable due to this being a Live Help one-on-one session.
