She started the session by talking about applying to colleges, connecting with the learner about how it would be big change, explaining terms that the learner was not aware of (for instance, sticker price), and explained differnt types of aid (need vs. merit) which ensured that Julia was following everything going on in the session before moving ahead.
Using the calculator together ensured that the learner was engaged and understood the concepts taught. While screen sharing would have made it easier for learners to follow along, we all face technical issues from time to time and Christina did an amazing job of conducting the session and conveying all relevant information. Despite the issues, learners were engaged in the activity and completed it with her help. The only improvement would be fixing those technical issues before next session.
At the end, they discussed the activity and busted some myths, that one of the learners was surprised by. It showed how the session was genuinely helpful for them. They also went through next steps, and they discussed sitting down with their parents/guardian and having a discussion about paying for college.
