A student means 'Vidyarthi' in Hindi. Vidyarthi comprises two words, 'Vidya' and 'Arthi', meaning one who is desirous of knowledge. A student is a person who along with physical and mental growth, develops an inherent confidence in himself. Students are national treasure. The future of the nation lies with the present generation. It is important that a student develops a strong value system based on empowering beleifs. The focus of a student should be to educating himself in totality. He should be receptive and learn not only from books but also from life experience. A Sanskrit 'Shlok' defines the characteristic of an ideal student.

काक चेष्टा, बको ध्यानं, स्वान निद्रा तथैव च । अल्पहारी, गृहत्यागी, विद्यार्थी पंच लक्षणं ।।

This means a student should be as alert as crow, have concentration like a heron, should sleep light like a dog, eat less than his appetite and refrain from indulging himself in the comforts of his house.

To be a true student, one should be humble, qurious, disciplined, dedicated, and should have the ability to extend himself for helping others. He should be simple and realize the importance of empowering thoughts.

सुखार्थिनः कुतो विद्या नास्ति विद्यार्थिनः सुखम्। सुखार्थी वा त्यजेत् विद्यां विद्यार्थी वा त्यजेत् सुखम्॥

This means that a student desirous of comforts will not be able to pursue the disciplined path of education and a student dedicated to pursuing education will have no time for comforts.

A student has to deeply understand the value of time. Each and every moment is important for growth and even the spare time should not be wasted. His dedication and hard work should move beyond jealousy into an environment of healthy competition. He should derive a sense of satisfaction by helping anyone who needs help.

It is important to understand the difference between literacy and education. A student has to be a student of life and learn from every experience that life offers him. This receptivity will lead to acquiring wisdom along with knowledge.
