About

Each Sunday, three students will have their college essays put under the microscope in a live teardown session. You’ll get ten minutes of direct, honest feedback focused on message, authenticity, and writing quality. Essays must be submitted 48 hours in advance with your background details and target schools. Everyone else is welcome to observe, learn, and apply the lessons to their own work.

I'm Andrew, and I hold degrees from MIT and UCLA. I live in Hawaii with my wife and son, who is in 9th grade. On Schoolhouse, I teach sessions on the college application process, guided by the belief that there’s a “right-fit” college for every student—and that what you make of the experience matters far more than rankings or prestige. I’ve worked in high-tech for over 20 years. I spend as much time as I can in the ocean—bodyboarding, swimming, or just floating.

- If your essay is selected, attendance is mandatory. You must log in a few minutes early and be present for your scheduled teardown.

- If you do not attend, your spot will be forfeited and given to another student in future sessions.

- All other students are welcome to attend as observers—no requirement, but strongly encouraged if you want to learn from real examples.

To be considered, you must submit your essay at least 48 hours in advance along with your intended major, academic background (SAT/grades), and a list of your stretch and target schools. Everyone else is welcome to attend as observers—watch the teardowns in real time, learn what admissions readers are likely to see, and apply the lessons directly to your own essay revisions. Priority to current seniors!
