About

Taking the AP Bio class or exam this upcoming school year? Join us for a summer introduction or refresher of some key biological concepts that underlie the curriculum and also go over some of the most important skills and information needed in this course! We will tackle the AP Bio curriculum unit by unit and go over things to the depth at which they are taught in AP Bio such as: the cell cycle, cellular energetics (photosynthesis+cellular respiration), cell signaling, genetics (chi square, Mendel, Punnet Square) all things DNA (transcription, translation,) evolution and evolutionary relationships (phylogenetic trees, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium). There will also be fun Kahoots at the end of each session to test your knowledge!

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

Some sessions do build off of eachother, but mostly the sessions will be separated based on the different contents they cover. Attend whichever sessions you feel you may need the most help with :))

Water, the Building Block of Life (Carbon), Macromolecules (lipids, proteins, amino acids) Cell Structure and Function (organelles and transportation)

Want to learn about the phospholipid bilayer and how its double-sided polarity relates to its property as the wall to life? Want to learn the difference between cohesion and adhesion and how it relates to the Hydrogen bonding between water molecules that gives rise to life? Want to learn what the C and N terminus are in any amino acid? Want to fangirl over the fact that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell and gain a newfound appreciation for the Golgi Apparatus? Join me to cover the first 2 units of AP Bio as well as review some of the necessary information you will need to tackle this chemistry-oriented part of the curriculum :D

AP Biology

Cell signaling used to be a bigger part of the Campbell AP Bio textbook, but CollegeBoard cut out major portions of it so that all of cell signaling is condensed into one small little lesson (4.6). However, cell signaling is very prominent in both MCQ and the FRQ parts of the actual exam (and is actually very interesting and convoluted) and is recognized by many to be the hardest part of the AP Bio curriculum. Learn about cell signaling, the phosphorylation cascade, and steroid hormones and practice some MCQ and FRQ relating to cell signaling in this session!

AP Biology

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration.

Contemplate over the confusing naming of Photosystem I and Photosystem II, understand that green plants are bad at absorbing green light, understand how NADPH and NADP move through photosynthesis and the exact mechanics behind the light cycle and dark cycle.

Understand input, output, and net gain of glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, and the citric acid cycle.

Also fermentation (lactic acid and alcoholic).

Learn about transcription and translation, structure of mRNA (poly-A tail and 5' cap and related siRNAs), briefly go over retroviruses.
