About

As the school year begins, I'm hosting this series for learners who want to strengthen their Algebra 1 skills so that their performance in school increases. There are no prerequisites to join this course, however mastery of pre-algebra would aid greatly in understanding the content covered in this course. We'll cover Algebra 1 topics from start to finish, and will finish the entirety of the course before the school year ends. Homework will be optional, however I will provide many resources outside of Khan Academy for my learners to strengthen their skills. We'll play many math games as well, to keep things fun. To add on, please bring a piece of paper as well as a writing utensil to take notes on the content being shared throughout the series. Other than that, the only thing I expect from you is your attention throughout the series and your best effort. What are you waiting for? Register now!

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

Please try your best to attend all of the sessions. If you feel as if you're comfortable with a given topic that I will cover, then it's okay for you to miss the session going over that topic. However, I advise not to miss many as I will be giving out many additional resources that you can use to strengthen your abilities as mathematicians.

About the Tutor

Hello! My name is Aqib, and I enjoy playing organized sports, programming, and most of all having fun! I believe that despite what age you are, you're never too old or too young to share what you're passionate about with others. I will do my best to be an active member of the schoolhouse community, to ensure the best experience for not only myself, but also my peers.

Session 1

Orientation

In this session, we'll become acquainted with one another. Additionally, I will provide a diagnostic quiz so that I can see where you stand in relation to how well you know Algebra 1 topics. This session will be rather short, and will require nothing but your presence!

Session 2

Algebra foundations

In this session, we'll cover all the basics that you need to know about Algebra 1. This includes combining like terms, breaking down algebraic word problems, algebraic properties, and evaluating expressions. I will also answer any general questions you may have about Algebra 1. Lastly, all you need to bring is a piece of pencil or notebook paper to take notes.

Session 3

Solving equations & inequalities

In this session, we'll cover how to solve equations with variables on both sides. Additionally, we'll also analyze the number of solutions to linear equations, and learn how to solve equations with unknown coefficients. To end the session, I'll host a blooket relating to the topic so that we could enjoy the last minutes of the session.

Session 4

Linear equations & graphs

We will learn how to identify linear equations, and how to graph linear equations. Additionally, we will learn what certain linear equations mean in specific situations, and how we can apply that knowledge to help us solve the problem. Lastly, I will cover how we can evaluate and convert linear equations into certain forms that may help us solve a given problem. I will also briefly touch on what functions are as they relate to linear equations.

Session 5

Linear equations & graphs

This session will mainly be used for practice, hence why it's shorter. If you have any questions about topics that have been covered in this series so far, please come ready with them in this session!

Session 6

Forms of linear equations

In this session, we'll learn about the three different forms of linear equations. I will go over how we can attain different information from each of the three forms, and how we can convert an equation from one form to another. To end the session, we'll practice with some word problems!

Session 7

Systems of equations

In this session, we'll learn about two strategies that you can use to solve a system of linear equations. These two strategies are called substitution and elimination. Additionally, I'll also go over some word problems, where the class will practice identifying what equations will make up the system based on a given situation. To conclude the session, I will host a math game where the class can get some practice with systems of linear equations while also having some fun.

Session 8

Inequalities (systems & graphs)

In this session, I will cover what an inequality is, systems of inequalities, and graphing inequalities. This session has a prerequisite, which is getting some practice with one variable inequalities. This will help you understand the information that is being shared in this session. I can't wait to see you there!

Session 9

Functions

We'll go over topics that include what a function is, function notation, how functions are similar to equations, and lastly how functions are different from equations. We'll end the session with a fun math game!

Session 10

Functions

After a brief warm-up of evaluating functions / function intuition, we're going to dive into some of the more advanced concepts relating to functions. These concepts include domain and range of a function, absolute and relative extremum, and lastly intervals where the function is positive, negative, increasing, or decreasing. During the session, there will be a slideshow and a blooket. Although it's not required, I would encourage people who register for this session to go through the slideshow provided below. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1yG58pEli7O4b1jptp-VqeHQHiwpH-1n6_o_I0SgAQrQ/edit?usp=sharing

Session 11

Functions

In this session, I will go over inverse functions. I'll go over what they are, how we can use them in real life, and how we can find the inverse of a given function. We'll practice this concept, and end the session with a fun game! If time permits, I'll go over some practice problems covering what we learned in all of our three sessions about functions.

Session 12

Absolute value & piecewise functions

After a brief warm-up relating to absolute value, I'll go over what absolute value functions are, and how we can graph equations that deal with shifting/absolute value. I'll also touch on piecewise functions, and how you can make observations about what's occurring over a certain interval of a graph. In others words, a "piece" of a function.

Session 13

Exponential growth & decay

In this session, I'll go over what exponential growth and decay is and how it compares to other types of growth/decay. Additionally, I will also go over exponential graphs. I will go over the shape of the graph, and how you can graph exponential functions. To conclude the session, I will share what makes an exponential function an exponential function.
