About

Conics, or Conic Sections, can be found everywhere in life. The orbits of planets, the shape of satellite dishes, and even the motion of cars rely on conic sections to work properly. You could say conics make up an essential part of our modern world!

In this series, we will learn how to graph conics (including circles, ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas), interpret their graphs, and understand their applications. We will also go over important Algebra concepts such as completing the square and graphing equations.

For a better learning experience, I would recommend being familiar with completing the square (we will go over this in the first session), since we will be doing much of this throughout the series.

Wed 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTCSep 10, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTC

Today will be an overview of the series. We won't get into specifics, but we will go over the different types of conics (circles, ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas) and how to find their standard forms (completing the square).

Conic sections

Fri 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTCSep 12, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTC

What are circles? This session will focus on what defines a circle and how to graph it in h/k form. The idea of eccentricity will first be introduced. Finally, we will go over some practice problems and applications.

Conic sections

Mon 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTCSep 15, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTC

Ellipses! How do we define an ellipse and how can we graph it? We will analyze the different parts of an ellipse (such as its foci and vertices) and solve problems involving ellipses.

Wed 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTCSep 17, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTC

The Parabola! You may have already seen this as y=x^2. In this session, we will redefine the equation of a parabola and cover its unique reflective properties. Additionally, we will solve some problems involving its equation and focus.

Fri 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTCSep 19, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTC

Quite Hyperbolic. We will learn how to write the standard form of a hyperbola and how to graph its asymptotes. Then, we will cover some of its properties and solve common hyperbolic problems.
