About

Have you ever had an idea about writing an article or a short story for fun but didn't know how to put into words? Have you ever felt your writing wasn't engaging to your audience? In this series, we will look at the various aspects of writing an article or a short story, from brainstorming ideas to writing it in a way that captures the audience's attention and keeps them reading to editing and revising. Right now, it's 5 sessions but more will be added if necessary.

Tutor Qualifications

Published author of a short story through Scholastic-Quill Club Writers.

Attendance is strongly recommended in order for all learners to get the most out of this course.

Session 1

Orientation

We will start by introducing ourselves and playing a couple Icebreaker games. Afterward, we will discuss examples of forms of writing that were very effective and/or engaging. Finally, will start the first step of the writing process: brainstorming ideas.

Session 2

Other Topics

We will review the ideas brainstormed previously and discuss how we can present our ideas in a way that engages the target audience. After we refine our ideas, we will discuss techniques and strategies to effectively communicate our ideas in a way that captures the audience's attention and makes them want to continue reading.

Session 3

Other Topics

In this session, we will learn how to create a story structure or plot (if applicable) and everyone will create one for the ideas they have chosen. If time permits, everyone can start their first drafts for the idea they have chosen.

Session 4

Other Topics

In this session, we will start or continue the writing process depending on where we are at. It can be any form of writing, be it scripts, blogs, articles, or short stories, and the topic or genre can be anything you wish. If you don't finish, you can work on it independently after the session.

Other Topics

In this session, we will discuss editing and revising strategies. If anyone feels comfortable, they may choose to share their piece of writing with the whole group, and we can all share constructive feedback with them.

Session 6

Office Hours

If anyone wants personalized feedback on their story/article, please drop by! Or if you haven't finished your story, come in to work and ask questions if needed.

Session 7

Review

In our final session, we will review everyone's final writing and give each other personalized feedback to make our stories even better.
