About

One of SHW's greatest assets is our community's diversity, with thousands of active members having their own unique backgrounds, identities, and stories. Through this series, we'll educate each other on our own backgrounds by shining a spotlight on these stories and work together to define and analyze the importance of not just having, but effectively living, in an increasingly diverse society. Each session will explore a different facet of what makes each of us who we are — from the foods we consume to the music we listen to — through group activities, mini-show-and-tells, discussions (and maybe some debates), and a ton of storytelling. Expect to be actively involved, either in the chat or preferably with your microphone. Check out some of the sessions below, to get an idea of the structure! More sessions and topics will be added based on learner interests and suggestions! This series will be running parallel to those run by these awesome SHW tutors @Iqra A(https://schoolhouse.world/u/79319&celebrate) and @Simran R(https://schoolhouse.world/u/11162&celebrate). Check out their series to find one that best suits your schedule! See you all there!

About the Tutor

Hey everyone! My name's Ishita and I'm so happy to be here on Schoolhouse.world! I'm a fifteen year old from India and I love learning about new, interesting bits of math and physics. I've been geeking out on this stuff for the last couple years, but I'm always looking for ways to expand my mind and learn something new. That's why you shouldn't be too surprised if you find me curled up watching lectures on art history one day and macroeconomics the next! Learning is super important to me, and that's why I'm here on Schoolhouse.world - I want to share my knowledge with others and learn from all of you. And don't worry, when I'm tutoring, I promise to keep it interesting and engaging as I can - any feedback is ALWAYS much appreciated. <3 When I don't have my nose buried in a book(or a Kindle, or a phone, or a computer screen for that matter, I'm not too picky), I love to sketch, annoy my little brother, rant about stuff and take long walks in the presence of the beautiful wind Bangalore city calls it's own(edit: I'm in Texas now!!). Whether it's coding or running, I'm always up for trying something new and having a good time. Here on Schoolhouse I work on peer reviewing as a backup coach, helping people with the peer review process occasionally! So, if you want to connect, chat, and learn or tutor with me, feel free to hit me up on Schoolhouse or by slack. Let's make the world a more awesome place- one session at a time! DFTBA. :D

Session 1

Orientation

We'll introduce ourselves and talk about our backgrounds and identities. We'll delve into talking about food: our favorite foods (let's be real, no one has just one favorite) and why we love them! Interested volunteers will even have the opportunity to have a live cooking show on Zoom to show off their cooking skills. We'll then talk about the importance of food and how it's shaped by region and location. We'll then end with a small game!

Session 2

Other Topics

Fashion show time! Prepare to sashay down virtual ramps and catwalks in a fabulous outfit, representing what YOU stand for (Schoolhouse-appropriate, of course)! We'll talk about and showcase some of our favorite pieces of clothing and outfits and their significance — feel free to dress up and go all out for the (Zoom) camera, or just show a sketch or photo if you'd prefer. We'll then discuss the pivotal role of fashion in self-expression, the evolution of fashion norms over time in different parts of the world, and how we think (or want) fashion to continue evolving in the future.

Session 3

Other Topics

We've all heard about how important school and education are, whether it's from all those boring politicians on TV, our teachers, or our own families. But why are they so important? This week, we'll examine different types of educational and schooling structures and how they can vary by country, region, and even each specific school. We'll talk about our own journeys through the education system, analyze possible problems with our current systems, and consider how we can work together to improve the system for future students.

Session 6

Other Topics

This week we'll talk about, well, talking! We'll see which languages each of us speaks, and see how many we can come up with as a group. We'll then consider how being able to speak all these different languages have influenced our upbringing, mindset, and way of life. How is this impacted by speaking a "living" language, as opposed to a "dead" one like Greek or Latin? And, on a global scale, how can similarities and differences in language be used to promote societal change, evolution, unification, or division? Man, just how powerful is this language thing?
