Here’s some helpful information to help you prepare for your session: 📌 Session introduction: At the start of the session, the event host will provide some introductory remarks about how the session will work and tips for discussion. 🧩 Discussion partner matching: All participants will be matched with a conversation partner to discuss with. If there are uneven numbers, you may have two conversation partners. 🤝 Breakout discussions: After the session introduction, everyone will switch to their breakout discussion. Your discussion will be unmoderated, so you can start when your partner arrives in the new Zoom link. 🗺️ Discussion Guide: You will have a topic-specific discussion guide for the session to help guide conversation. ⏰ Session length: The breakout discussions are scheduled for 45 minutes but you can discuss as long as you want! ✅ Stay on topic: Please make sure to stay on topic. If you and your partner run out of things to discuss, it’s okay to end the discussion early. Welcome to the InspireTalks, a featured competition in Schoolhouse Nexus to celebrate Schoolhouse’s 5th Anniversary! This event is designed to test participants’ research and public speaking abilities while also evaluating key skills such as critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving. Participants will compete in a structured, multi-round format, with increasing difficulty and eliminations at each stage. Event Heads: Sarah W and Hafsah M If you’ve ever seen a Ted Talk before, our event rounds will run similar to how Ted Talks go, with a few differences. In our first round, you’ll get to present a short Ted Talk on a topic of your choice (provided that it adheres to Schoolhouse policy). The following three rounds will consist of extempore Ted Talks, which means that you’ll have a set amount of time to research and come up with a speech on a specific topic that’ll be given at the session. Then, in our final round, our finalists will compete against each other for one final Ted Talk for the title of the winner! Since this event aims to test your research abilities among other skills, you’re allowed to consult any resources at your disposal except for AI tools like ChatGPT. Welcome to the INTERPOL Committee sessions of the Schoolhouse Fall Model United Nations 2024! Schoolhouse MUN is an online Model United Nations event organized by a team of volunteers from schoolhouse.world. Delegates will have the opportunity to represent different countries in five distinct committees of the United Nations. This experience will enhance their understanding of current world issues and improve their public speaking, collaboration, and leadership skills. Agenda: Countering Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery Developing international strategies to combat human trafficking networks and provide support to victims. Chairs: Anshu P and Luca G Overview of the Committee’s Agenda: In 2017 alone, an estimated 40.3 million people fell victim to modern slavery—an alarming reality that many are unaware of. Smugglers prey on those yearning for a better life, manipulating their dreams and snatching away their freedom in the process. Today, an unimaginable number of children have been reduced to commodities. In certain areas of Africa and the Mekong region, children make up half of all trafficking victims. In West Africa, that figure soars to a staggering 100%. These lucrative crimes thrive on the vulnerability of the most susceptible, benefiting the cruelest among us. The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) was established to address similar transnational issues. While INTERPOL is not a law enforcement agency itself, it plays an essential role in facilitating global police cooperation and supporting law enforcement to combat human trafficking and modern slavery. As delegates, it is your responsibility to explore how, why, when, and to what extent INTERPOL can and must act. Engage in vigorous discussions, challenge each other's perspectives, and ask those hard-hitting questions. For those new to the concept, MUN stands for Model United Nations, where participants take on the roles of country representatives to tackle real-world global issues. MUNs are an amazing way to build skills in public speaking, negotiation, and critical thinking while exploring international relations. Through this series, we aim to bring you a dynamic and educational experience, allowing you to participate in meaningful debates and make impactful resolutions.
