Beginning Music Theory and Composition

    Starts

You do not need any prior knowledge! Introduces the fundamentals of organized sound, emphasizing rules of Western music composition and offering opportunities to create original works. Students will develop the ability to describe, understand, and recognize aspects of tonal music, and skills in sight-singing, dictation/aural, written aspects, composition, and analytical areas. Students will be exposed to a variety of exercises designed to develop these skills including listening, performance, writing, creating, and analyzing music. While the main emphasis is placed on music of the Common Practice Period (1600-1750), music of other stylistic periods may also be studied. Explores use of technology for composition.

Ryan praised correct answers and encouraged participation. To improve, he could highlight more specific achievements or improvements from individual students. The session felt relaxed and fun. Ryan's use of humor and casual conversation made it easy for students to ask questions and share thoughts. The "Hero Brian" character was a cool touch that made the lesson more enjoyable. Overall, Ryan's teaching style is engaging and informative. To improve, he could focus more on checking understanding throughout the lesson and providing more specific feedback to students. But his creative approaches and deep knowledge of the subject make for an interesting and effective lesson.

Ryan often asked students what they remembered from previous lessons, like about the Altai Mountains. He could improve by doing a quick recap at the start to see what everyone already knows about the Mongols. Ryan was good at explaining things in different ways, like using the crayon analogy. He also answered questions well. To improve, he could check more often if everyone is following along, especially during longer explanations. Ryan did a great job keeping everyone involved. He asked lots of questions, had students read slides, and used fun elements like the "Hero Brian" character. This kept the lesson interesting and interactive. While Ryan often asked if there were questions, he could do more to check if students really understood the material. Maybe adding quick quizzes or having students summarize key points would help.
