I think you did an excellent job when it came to adjusting for your learners. This is because when your learners' struggled with the process for factoring, you consistently understood what they did wrong the a, b, c components and tried to tailor them to use that method. Additionally, it was a good idea to conduct factoring with a not equal to 1 as you are able to fill in knowledge gaps with factoring. Most commonly, the x^2 component has a coefficient with 1, but when it's not equal to 1, you are able to build off their knowledge of basic factoring and see if they can extend it.
