Welcome to the Science Olympiad Chem Lab Mock Invitational! In this competition, you will be completing an online exam, simulating an actual Division C Science Olympiad Invitational. This mock invitational is only open to current high schoolers. All chemistry levels welcomed! 🏅The top 6 highest scoring competitors will be recognized during the award ceremony! 🏅 Competition Info - You will have 50 minutes to complete the test, with a 5 minute grace period at the end. There are multiple choice, free response, and lab sections - The test is to be completed individually without a partner. - You are allowed pencils, pens, erasers, scratch paper, a class III calculator (Stand-alone, programmable, graphing calculators), and your team's note sheet (may be printed or online). - Your note sheet must be one unique 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper, which may be in a sheet protector sealed by tape or laminated, with information on both sides in any form and from any source. Rules (taken directly from 2015 + 2025 SciOly): 🧪 The competition will consist of a series of task focused in the areas of kinetics and chemical reactions/stoichiometry. These tasks could include hands-on activities, questions on listed topics, interpretation of data (e.g., graphs, diagrams, tables) or observation of an establish and running experiment. 🧪 Nomenclature, formula writing, & stoichiometry (mole conversion & percentage yield) are essential of chemistry & may be included in the event. Participants are expected to know the symbols & charges for: nitrate, carbonate, phosphate, acetate, sulfate, ammonium, bicarbonate, & hydroxide. Participants should know how to use the "ite" form of anion (one less oxygen than the "ate" form). With a periodic table, participants should be able to obtain charges for monatomic ions (e.g., Na+, S2-). 🧪 Participants should understand the following about chemical reactions/stoichiometry: - Classification of reaction type - Balancing Reactions - Reaction Prediction (including predicting products of metathesis reactions, solubility, oxidation-reduction, total and net ionic equations) 🧪 Participants should understand the following about kinetics: - Measuring reaction rates - Identify how and why reaction conditions (temperature, concentration, particle size, and catalysts) affect reaction rates - Determine rate laws from actual experimentation or data provided - Determine rate constants with actual units Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Hey everyone! I'm the president of the Science Olympiad Team at my school and have years of experience competing in Chem Lab. I hope this session helps everyone get a head start for the upcoming season and I'm very excited to help others! This workshop includes 6 sessions total over the span of two weeks, 3 sessions each week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM PDT. This is a great opportunity to share with your team and teammates! No worries if you can't attend any session. Feel free to drop in whenever you are free! I totally don't care about attendance; I'm aiming for a fun community with a love for Science Olympiad! I hope this can be an open session where others can share their chem lab tips as well. The session is open to all, but it's targeted towards students competing in Science Olympiad. I suggest that you have already completed first year high school chemistry. Even if you are not in Science Olympiad, you're welcome to join! You can learn about the competition and learn general chemistry along the way. Chem Lab for SciOly this year covers two topics: Chemical Reactions/Stoichiometry and Kinetics. We'll spend the first week studying Chemical Reactions/Stoiciometry and the second week studying Kinetics. Rather than direct teaching, there will be a high emphasis on competition techniques, including time management techniques, creating the perfect notesheet, common lab questions, and most of all, practice problems. Most practice questions will be direct questions from past year's chem lab tests; however, there will be supplemental material from the AP Chemistry curriculum.
