10 Hobbies to Explore for Next Year

Have you ever yearned for a fun way to connect with your peers and expand your social network? Or are you just looking for something interesting to do in your free time? The Oxford Dictionary defines a hobby as “an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure.” But they are so much more than that. Whatever the matter, hobbies are a perfect way for you to unleash your creativity while exploring your passion and personality. So what are some that may suit you?

Crocheting– this hobby is definitely on the rise. People find it not only entertaining, says the Mav Newspaper, but also soothing. You can do it pretty much anywhere– whether you’re at the park, watching a required educational video, or even at school. There are a variety of unique projects that you can make good use of, such as hats, plushies, sweaters, blankets, and so much more.

Creating drinks– I fell in love with this hobby a few weeks ago and have been obsessed with it ever since! Personalizing your drinks is a perfect way to serve not only yourself, but also your friends and family! You can search for “drink ideas for teens”, and thousands of delicious recipes will pop up. Personally, I recommend blending frozen strawberries, sparkling water, a tad bit of maple syrup, and ice to create your own Sparkling Strawberry Slushie. From there, you can even start a channel dedicated to posting recipes for your drinks!

Jogging– this hobby is not only for my fellow cross-country runners, but for anyone who wants to stay fit and get some fresh air! According to the Mayo Clinic, running stimulates mental well-being, builds endurance, helps maintain a healthy weight, and also improves sleep quality. If you have a tight schedule, I recommend downloading text-to-speech apps like Speechify and listening to your notes or textbooks while getting exercise.

Scrapbooking– If you are someone who loves stickers, colors, and stationery, this hobby is perfect for you! Scrapbooking is the process of creating beautiful works of art using various craft materials. This reminiscent hobby allows people to preserve and remember moments of the past while expressing their creativity. You can find a lot of scrapbooking inspiration on social media sites like Pinterest, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. (Feel free to check out my old YouTube channel for some ideas: Berluna - YouTube).

Journaling– There is a common misconception that keeping a diary or journal is “lame” or “immature”– but this could not be more untrue! In fact, writing out all your thoughts and emotions helps keep them from staying bottled up inside of you. When journaling, do not feel any pressure to be formal– just be yourself. According to Berkeley’s newsletter, journalism can help you achieve goals, organize your feelings and thoughts, remember things better, and relieve you of stress. If you are looking for a small habit that can lead to remarkable changes, journaling is a powerful place to start!

Blogging– In the 21st century, the world has experienced a significant surge in influencers. This hobby is for those who are looking to share their life experiences with the world, whether it is through a YouTube channel, an Instagram account, or a personalized website. While this is a popular hobby, some challenges include posting regular content and facing criticism from others.

Esoteric/Metaphysical hobbies– Less commonly known, these hobbies are a unique choice! They encompass anything “otherworldly,” such as fate, tarot, astrology and the Zodiac, and much more. Tarot cards are a fun fortune-telling game for you to try with your friends!

Photography– This is a hobby that my little sister takes a great interest in. If you are interested in photography, you do not need a high-tech camera or any expensive materials – just grab your phone and find inspiration in the little things in life! Whether you take pictures of the night sky, sunset, flowers, bees, or even buildings, photography is a fantastic way for you to express yourself. You can even try entering competitions once you build up your expertise!

Chess– This is a strategy game enjoyed all around the world. You can play and learn it through online websites, or buy a physical gameboard to play with others! Chess clubs are gaining popularity, so if you want to learn more about chess, join one if your school offers it. Once you reach a certain level, you can also enter tournaments to build up your expertise.

Gardening– Last but not least, gardening is a great way to benefit the environment and beautify your yard. You can choose from a variety of plants, and give the ones you plant your utmost attention and love. This is a great outdoor activity that offers many physical and mental health benefits, according to the American Public Health Association. However, this hobby is not for everyone – for your garden to thrive, you must be willing to put in the time, passion, and effort. In my opinion, the hard work pays off!

No matter your personality, schedule, or interests, there is a hobby out there for you. Whether you want to express yourself through art, grow a green thumb, explore the stars, or share your ideas with the world, trying something new can bring unexpected joy and growth. So as the new year approaches, don’t be afraid to experiment. Who knows? The hobby you start today might just become your passion for life!
