Linear Functions and Linear Equations study group

Starts

Timing: Approximately 9 weeks

Linear relationships are among the most prevalent and useful relationships to mathematics and the real world. Any inequality in two variables that exhibits a constant rate of change for these variables is linear. Real-world contexts that have a constant rate of change and data sets with a nearly constant rate of change can be effectively modelled by a linear function. You will explore all aspects of linear relationships in this series: contextual problems that involve constant rate of change, lines in the coordinate plane, arithmetic sequences, and algebraic means of expressing a linear relationship between two quantities. Through this series, you will develop deep skills with linear functions and equations and an appreciation for the simplicity and power of linear functions as building blocks of all higher mathematics.

ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS
You will understand that ...
- A linear relationship has a constant rate of change, which can be visualised as the slope of the associated graph.
- There are many ways to algebraically represent a linear function and each form reveals different aspects of the function.
- Linear functions can be used to model contextual scenarios that involve a constant rate of change or data whose general trend is linear.
- A solution to a two-variable linear equation or inequality is an ordered pair that makes the equation or inequality true.

KEY CONCEPTS
- 1: Constant rate of change and slope
- 2: Linear functions
- 3: Linear equations
- 4: Linear models of nonlinear scenarios
- 5: Two-variable linear inequalities

Algebra I Masterclass - Complete in 13 Days!

Starts

We will dive straight into Algebra I for 13 days, with the goal of having complete proficiency by the end of the course. Every class, we will start out with a new Khan Academy Unit.

While the Khan Academy Algebra I program will be used as a ‘guideline’, we will also use the Prentice Hall Mathematics Algebra I textbook as a supplement. That way, we can derive extra problems and example as necessary.

The lessons will include professional slides, clear explanations, and most importantly, lots of student input. When necessary, Kahoots and other fun games will be added to help enhance your learning. 👍

The last class will be a final exam. I will have personally created the questions based on YOUR learning. 🌟✨ There will also be a brief Q&A.

Please come with pen and paper to take notes. It will be very beneficial.

Acing Algebra 1

2nd session

Algebra 1 is a stepping stone to higher math courses, providing a strong foundation in algebraic thinking and problem-solving. This course helps you build confidence and prepares you for more complex math challenges.

Unlock the building blocks of math success by preparing for Algebra 1! This session will be divided into five key math topics that will set you up for future mathematical adventures.

We'll start with Algebra Foundations, where you'll learn the very basics, like what variables are and how to work with them. Then, we'll dive into Solving Equations & Inequalities, figuring out how to find the answers to mathematical puzzles.

Next up is Working with Units, which helps us use math to solve real-world problems involving measurements. Then, we'll explore Linear Equations & Graphs, learning how equations can create straight lines on a graph. Lastly, we'll master the Forms of Linear Equations, understanding the different ways these lines can be written. Let's make math easy and fun!

I DO GIVE ASSESSMENTS TO SEE WHAT YOU KNOW, AND THIS WILL HELP ME SEE WHERE WE NEED TO WORK ON.
