The engagement in this session was top-tier. Instead of just lecturing, Alanis used the annotate tool to turn the tense identification into a game. She didn't just tell them the answers; she asked them to justify why they chose "past" or "perfect." When Hannah struggled with a question, Alanis validated her reasoning first before walking her through the plural/singular distinction. She also did a great job managing the "chatty" vs. "quiet" dynamic by encouraging everyone to use the annotate tool if they weren't comfortable on the mic.

Alanis was incredibly patient with the distinction between "its" and "it’s." When Cate mentioned she was having a hard time seeing why "the animal" was singular despite the context, Alanis pivoted immediately. She explained that grammar is "literal" rather than "emotional," which seemed to be a lightbulb moment for the students. She also handled the tie-breaker for next week's topic very democratically with a coin flip, ensuring both Hannah and Cate felt their needs were heard.

Thanks so much for the session. It was really helpful for me, I've seen that one of my strengths in the SAT R&W is Expression of Ideas. Thanks once again!!

Alanis did an excellent job breaking down the Form, Structure, and Sense domain, which can often feel dry or overly technical. The use of the Khan Academy verb tense matrix was a huge win. It helped give the learners a visual anchor for "aspect," a concept that usually confuses students. I particularly liked her "have been" shortcut for identifying Perfect Progressive tenses; that’s the kind of practical, test-day tip that really sticks. One small improvement would be to have a pre-written example for "modifiers" ready on the slide, as she had to think of one on the fly when Cate asked, though her improvised explanation was still very clear.

The vibe of the session was very warm and peer-to-peer. Alanis shared that she is a non-native English speaker herself, which immediately lowered the stakes for the learners. By admitting that English grammar rules can be "weird" or "annoying," she made the students feel like they were on the same team against the SAT, rather than feeling like they were "bad" at English. This helped Cate and Arman feel comfortable asking "basic" questions without hesitation. Overall, great job, and keep up the amazing work, Alanis!

Thanks a lot, Alanis! The session was very helpful for me. Even though I just started studying this October, I was able to do good in the first assessment. Thanks once again.
