Hi Blair, this is Martha's mom, Daniela. Thank you for explaining this subject. Sadly it is not taught at schools at all. At least not at public schools in California.
It would merit a much more in-depth explanation of the grammar involved - however, you did all you could within an hour. (We spent much of the seventh and eighth grade learning about sentence structure, but that was long time ago and on the other side of the world.)
While the issue of sentence structure seems marginal in English and few people get it right in real life, it is of great importance when learning other languages. We came across the problem of being ignorant of sentence structure when Martha started learning Greek. I had to give her a crash course : )
So thank you again for approaching this much needed subject!
