Even with the limited time, it would have been helpful to pause more intentionally and give learners space to explain how they approach these types of questions. At several points, you asked whether a question was easy or hard, but you did not wait long enough for everyone to respond; you moved on once a single learner answered. If time does not allow for extended waiting, a more effective strategy would be to cold call learners by name and ask what they think. But this alone does not ensure participation; instead, asking learners to explain how they would approach a question is what truly encourages engagement and reveals their thinking. Hearing a learner’s thought process, even if it is incorrect, can be very valuable because it allows you to address common misunderstandings and helps other learners who may be thinking similarly. Instead, most of the explanation came directly from you, with an overall message of “this is easy, you can do it on your own,” which limited meaningful engagement and reduced opportunities to understand and build on the learners’ thinking.
