Thanks for the session, I learned a lot!

Learner · 1 mo. ago

Thank you! I appreciated how you took the time to wait on us if we didn't understand.

Yes, the learners are able to let their ideas flourish and came up with a good chunk of info that can be included in their essay.

Thank you for greeting the learners at the start of the session! You maintain a respectful tone throughout the session, which likely contributed to the learners participating so much. I like that you outlined what this session aimed to achieve at the beginning of the session, helping everyone get on the same track! When it comes to strengthening learner confidence, you do a great job there too! When the learners contribute to the jamboard/whiteboard or participate otherwise, you make sure to affirm their input with phrases like "that's perfectly fine" or "that was beautiful." Well done! I can see how Schoolhouse's safety rules can be kind of a hindrance when it comes to collaborating efficiently :( I'm glad that you still didn't cave and collect any personal info (i.e., emails). Also, you're right- you can share a doc anonymously as long as you send a link that's editable by everyone with access! This is totally okay according to Schoolhouse's standards.

-You effectively check the learner's prior understanding by asking him what he currently knows about the Gold Rush. This let you know if he was already knowledgeable about the event or if he needs a bit of a refresher, and I can tell that you used this to guide the next part of the session. You gave him a quick history recap based on what he already said he knew. -You do a wonderful job adapting to the learner's unique needs! Firstly, you ask for the instructions that the learner was given to evaluate what type of essay he's supposed to be writing. You also directly clarify that this is more of a historical recap essay than an analytical one. Notably, you read up on the California Gold Rush, a historical topic, to better aid the learner's essay writing. You make sure to still give English tips even though this session was guided pretty heavily by historical knowledge. -Since this session encompassed a long conversation between you and the learner, you engaged him very well. You were able to bounce ideas off of one another, and you gave him gentle nudges towards completing the essay (asking him to take notes, giving tips as to how he can interpret Khan Academy history articles, etc.). -Since you are conversing so much during this session, you didn't have to directly confirm the learner's progress. You could simply check on him by seeing how his writing is being organized, which you already did. For future sessions, ask the learner for any final questions at the end of the session.

Mar, great job in this session! The learner's request kind of threw you for a loop, but you navigated it very well. I think that opening up a Google doc for you and the learner to collaborate on was a great move, because it let you oversee how the learner was doing and what progress he made. The R&W tips that you gave were valuable and you made sure that you didn't lead the learner into any trouble; that is, you clarified what would be considered plagiarism and gave him alternatives to avoid that route. I appreciate that when the learner had a question, you opened up Google Images to elucidate your response and provide a visual of the idea you're trying to convey. Nicely done!

Realest tutor out there

-There is no distinct lesson that you aim to teach in this session, but you do an effective job at checking the learners' prior knowledge by asking them what you could do for them in the session. That is sufficient here! -You ask guiding questions to the learners based on what they need help with. For example, one of the learners wanted help with a rhetorical analysis, so you asked him if he knows what a rhetorical analysis aims to achieve. This way, you were able to see if he needs help with the concept or just procedural help. You also switch gears according to the learners' whims, such as when they said they wanted to talk about Harry Potter. -You establish a group conversation involving yourself and all of the learners. You make sure that they have the opportunity to ask questions regarding their goals at any point during the session. You use familiar language to stimulate their participation, and the session is evidently led by the learners. -You confirm the learners' progress by asking questions about the content you just covered and having the learners participate in mini-activities that relate to your instruction. An example of this is the collaborative jamboard/whiteboard that you established. By working together, you can see how well the learners are able to come up with ideas for the rhetorical analysis.

Mar, you conducted this R&W office hours session like a champ! The session was evidently led by the learners as you asked them what they wanted help with before going into any instruction. I like that you kept an open mind throughout the session! That is, you were able to take suggestions from the learners, such as opening up a jamboard or whiteboard so that you can put your ideas down on a collaborative forum. You were able to piggy-back off of the learners suggestions, offering more detail or another perspective to consider. I am sure that by the end of this session, the learners had a lot of material to consider for their rhetorical analysis. Great job!

Yes, the learner is thankful for your tutoring, and you were able to fill up a blank Google Doc with 1.5 pages of detailed information.

Thank you for greeting the learner (try to use his name, though)! You also use a kind and respectful tone throughout the entire session that lets the learner feel comfortable enough to participate often. You are able to give the learner tips on researching and summarizing his findings without patronizing him or taking over his assignment. You also constnatly affirm his participation by using positive phrases like "excellent question!" Well done! (I heard the note at the end! Don't worry, I just appreciate that you let the learner know that this should have been in the history subworld. You did a great job helping the learner out here :)
