A Beginner Chess Class

We'll do a few puzzles so I can get a sense of everyone's playing strength. Then, I'll go over a few basic principles. For the rest of the time, everyone will play an online game while I spectate and give advice. If anyone wants to co-host, feel free. I would like to give individual feedback but that would be hard to do with 5 students at once and having two teachers would also allow for more discussion ... probably.

A Beginner Chess Class

We'll go over some basic tactics. 1 move checkmates, basic forks, skewers, pins, etc. We probably won't have time to go over everything I just listed without it getting tedious so we'll do just a few and this should let everyone be better acquainted with how pieces move as well as how to improve. Then, I'll introduce some opening principles and we'll to try to put the opening principles into practice with real games.

Chess for intermediate level players

We'll take turns sharing screen and playing chess. I'm thinking that I can try to help ask guiding questions during the game like "what's your opponent trying to do?" or "is there a way to improve your bishop", etc. Alternatively, perhaps I'll play a game and everyone can ask why I'm choosing the moves I choose and why not some other moves. It'll depend on how many people there I suppose. I hope for this to be for those who has some experience playing chess (1800 - 2000 on lichess) so that we can focus more on abstract positional concepts like space and quality of pieces rather than just tactics. If any 2100 + wants to co-host, feel free. Chess discussions are always a blast.

We'll introduce what calculus does in general and what limits have to do with it. This is intended to be understandable to a beginner and we will see how far we can get.
