About

In this one-time Algebra 1 session we will focus on solving absolute value equations and inequalities of the form |ax + b| < |cx + d|, |ax + b| > k, and related A-Level style problems. We will practise turning an absolute value into cases, solving the resulting linear inequalities, and writing solution sets using inequality notation and number lines. Some questions include a parameter / substitution a, so we will also discuss how the solution changes with a and how to interpret the answer set. We will NOT use logarithms or exponentials in this session – the focus is purely on |x|-based reasoning. Expect lots of guided examples, then past-paper style questions for you to try with live feedback.

A recent graduate of CAIE A-levels with Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science. Currently, pursuing my B.Sc. in Computer Science & Engineering. Passionate about math and education, I am eager to help others excel in subjects including math, physics, computer science, and SAT Prep. Excited to tutor in various math areas such as Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Statistics. Let's learn and grow together!

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

This is a single, fast-paced practice session. Please join on time and plan to stay for the full hour so the group can move through the problems together. I will give time to think and then invite volunteers to share ideas before I show full solutions, so active participation is expected (speaking or using the chat is fine).

If you know in advance that you cannot attend or will miss most of the session, please consider unregistering so another learner can take the spot.

Mon 3:15 AM - 5:15 AM UTCDec 8, 3:15 AM - 5:15 AM UTC

We will work through a set of A-Level style absolute value inequalities, all with linear expressions inside the | |.

Planned skills:
• Rewrite |ax + b| inequalities as two linear cases and solve them carefully.
• Solve inequalities like |2x + 1| < |x|, |x − 2| > 3|2x + 1|, 2|x − 3| > |3x + 1|, etc.
• Handle questions that involve a parameter a, such as |x + 3a| > 2|x − 2a|, and interpret the solution set in terms of a.
• Express answers using inequality notation and, when helpful, sketch simple number line diagrams.
• Check solutions back in the original absolute value inequality.

We will not use logarithms or exponentials in this session; all problems are purely about |x|-type expressions. I will start with a quick recap of absolute value ideas, then we will spend most of the time on guided practice and past-paper style questions.
