How it Works

These steps only apply to video certifications, not honorary certifications such as for APs or the SAT.

1

Choose a Khan Academy Test

Test your knowledge across the entire course, or just in a single topic—both qualify you to tutor. Nervous? You can review and practice the unit before on Khan Academy.

2

Record a video

To verify your knowledge as you take the test, you'll explain your reasoning out loud while recording a video that shares your screen and your webcam.

3

Submit with at least a score of 90%

To submit your certification, you'll need to get at least 90% of questions correct. Didn't quite make it? You can keep practicing and record your video as many times as you need.

4

Get your certification

Once your video has been reviewed by peer volunteers, you're certified! You'll get an official tutor badge in this World and get an email with a publicly shareable link to your Schoolhouse.world certification transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a comprehensive list of FAQs, please visit our Help Desk.

What are the different options for certification?

If you'd like to get certified in a math or science subject, then you may request a certification by submitting a video of yourself working on the appropriate Khan Academy test. For SAT, AP, and selected other topics, you may instead request an honorary certification by submitting an explanation and documentation of your prior experience.

Are honorary certifications included on your transcript/portfolio?

No. Video certifications are featured on the portfolio to demonstrate mastery of subject material, along with tutoring statistics. Honorary certifications on Schoolhouse are granted based on SAT scores and AP exam scores, which students submit directly to colleges. Since they don't give colleges new information, we don't include them on the portfolio.

What certification do I need to become a tutor in a subject?

Generally, you can become a tutor in a subject after getting certified in at least one topic or completing the course challenge. To tutor our programs (such as SAT Bootcamp), you need to complete a couple extra steps. You can see the complete steps on the tutor tab.

How do Course Challenges work?

If you get certified in a Course Challenge, that means you're eligible to tutor in any one of the units in the course. There is no need to also get certified within each unit if you've done the Course Challenge.

What do I do if I have other questions?
