What is Model UN?
Model United Nations (Model UN or MUN) is more than just a student activity—it’s a global movement that turns classrooms into diplomatic arenas.
It all began in the early 20th century as simulations of the League of Nations, and after the founding of the United Nations in 1945, it evolved into what we now call Model UN. The first official "Model United Nations" conference was held at Swarthmore College in 1947.
At its core, Model UN is an educational simulation where students take on the roles of UN delegates. They represent countries or organizations, research global issues, debate policies, and work together to draft resolutions—just like real diplomats. It’s a crash course in international relations, public speaking, negotiation, and critical thinking.
But what makes it truly compelling is the transformation it sparks. Students don’t just learn about the world—they learn how to shape it. Many alumni of MUN have gone on to careers in law, politics, international affairs, and activism.
Whether you're a seasoned delegate or a curious newcomer, MUN is a powerful way to understand the complexities of global diplomacy—and to find your voice in the process. Want to include this in your judge invite or use it for something else?
