About

This six-unit pre-algebra programme moves students from the foundations of algebra through to exponents and scientific notation, with each unit building directly on the last. Starting with variables and expressions, sessions progress through equations and inequalities, percent and rational number word problems, proportional relationships, one and two-step equations, and finally roots, exponents, and scientific notation. Every lesson follows a consistent structure of vocabulary, worked examples, student practice, and guided discussion, designed to build both skill and confidence in a mixed ability group.

Hi! I’m a university student transitioning from engineering into a double major in physics and economics. I enjoy helping others understand challenging topics and feel more confident in their learning. I’m joining Schoolhouse to gain tutoring experience, support students in a positive environment, and grow my teaching skills since I hope to teach in the future. I’m excited to be part of the Schoolhouse community.

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

We totally get that life happens, but showing up consistently is really important for getting the most out of these sessions. Each lesson builds on the last, so missing one makes the next one harder. That said, here are the expectations:

If you need to miss a session, just let us know beforehand. Everyone gets one free pass, but missing 2 or more sessions without a heads up will trigger a conversation about your place in the programme. Miss 3 or more and we may have to open that spot to someone else. Turning up late regularly is also something we take seriously, so please aim to be on time. We want this to work for everyone, but attendance has to be a two-way commitment.

SESSION 1

Variables & expressions

Variables & expressions

Sun 3:00 AM - 4:30 AM UTCMar 22, 3:00 AM - 4:30 AM UTC

This unit is about introducing the idea that letters can represent unknown numbers. Students learn to write, read, and simplify algebraic expressions. Key ideas include what a variable is, what a coefficient is, combining like terms, and substituting values into expressions.

Equations & inequalities introduction

Equations & inequalities introduction

Wed 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM UTCMar 25, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM UTC

Here students move from expressions to statements. An equation says two things are equal, an inequality says one is bigger or smaller. Students learn to read and write both, understand what a solution means, and start thinking about balance, as in what you do to one side you must do to the other.

SESSION 3

Percent & rational number word problems

Percent & rational number word problems

Sat 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM UTCMar 28, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM UTC

This unit ties together percentages, fractions, and decimals in real-world contexts. Students solve problems involving discounts, tax, tips, interest, and changes in value. The emphasis is on translating a word problem into a calculation rather than just memorising formulas.

Proportional relationships

Proportional relationships

Mon 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM UTCMar 30, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM UTC

Building directly on ratios and rates, this unit formalises the idea that two quantities can change at a constant rate. Students identify proportional relationships from tables, graphs, and equations, and connect them to the concept of a constant of proportionality, which is essentially the unit rate.

SESSION 5

One-step and two-step equations & inequalities

One-step and two-step equations & inequalities

Thu 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM UTCApr 2, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM UTC

Students now solve for unknowns using inverse operations. A one-step equation requires one operation to isolate the variable. A two-step equation requires two. Inequalities follow the same process but students also learn that multiplying or dividing by a negative number flips the inequality sign.

SESSION 6

Roots, exponents, & scientific notation

Roots, exponents, & scientific notation

Sat 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM UTCApr 4, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM UTC

This unit introduces powers and roots. Students learn what squaring and cubing a number means, how to find square roots and cube roots, the laws of exponents for multiplying and dividing, and how to write very large or very small numbers in scientific notation. This is often the unit where students first feel like the maths looks "serious."
