About

Music is one of the most frequently present and one of the most beautiful things in this world. Even when you don’t go out of your way to search for a specific sound track from your favorite artist or attend the concert of a famous artist/your local church choir, you can find music in internet ads chained to your YouTube video, in malls, on the streets, while you’re just shopping for groceries. It ranges from elevator music to disco music, from that slow tune in the coffee shop to the fast and popular hits on the dance floor, from mall music to….the OTHER type of mall music.
And each and every time, the sound lights you up inside and makes you excited-and sometimes it makes you wonder how it was made.

Well, wonder no longer-this course will cover the fundamentals of music-the science behind it, the notation behind it, the parts of music-everything. And this is open to everyone-regardless of whether or not you have an instrument or even a favorite music genre!

For music is not just present everywhere-it’s not just beautiful-it’s one of the most accessible activities in the world.

This session will cover the very basics of music, from the concept of sound, to notes, to rhythm, to melody/harmony, to the end result that is the songs we know today! My goal is to make the session as interactive as possible (given not too many people join of course!) and to make the sessions as friendly and as open as possible! Session specific content is TBD as time goes on.

Whether you’re new or have been here before, there’s a passion and a thing to learn!

Hello, fellow Schoolhouse.world classmates! My name is Ryan and I am a HS senior. While I live in the USA, I speak Mandarin at home. You probably come here to know what kind of tutor I am, so I'll just say it: I think connection is the base of all peer tutoring, so that's something I aim to emphasize with my learning structures. I'm not a fan of lecture-style tutoring (though I sometimes do it anyways since I have a habit of overexplaning myself) and I'm not a fan of textbook-style learning: you learn the way you feel most with. With the way I talk, and the fact that I'm kind of anti-social and giddy when I talk, you won't get the most straightforward session, but what you will get is one that makes you feel welcome and comfortable (I hope 😊) Now about me: I have played piano for almost 11 years, and love to play Romantic era compositions and jazz music. I’m not vert studious, but I am very involved-participating in two mini jazz ensembles, Chamber Choir, Model UN, NAQT Quiz Bowl, Jazz Band (at district level) and Theatre Orchestra, as well as functioning as Vice President and accompanist of Concert Choir. I’m also an avid MOBA gamer, and I play a lot of Mobile Legends, some Honor of Kings, and recently started playing League of Legends I’m personally not very strong personality wise, but something I do take pride in is my willingness to challenge myself, through taking challenging classes (took Multivariate Calculus just last semester) and fighting my antisocial instincts/fears of public speaking through Model UN and Schoolhouse.world, and also auditioning for actual theatre! My goal is to get Gold in Schoolhouse, get accepted in-state to become a data science major and eventually get my Masters degree, and be the best I can be.
