For Faculty Advisors
If you're the faculty advisor of a Key Club, we would love to collaborate with you bring Schoolhouse to schools! Below, you'll find a quick summary of key questions you might have about Schoolhouse. If you have any other questions, please email [email protected].
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Schoolhouse?
Schoolhouse is a non-profit organization started by Sal Khan (founder of Khan Academy) to connect students around the world for free, peer-to-peer tutoring over Zoom. Schoolhouse offers both instant homework help and longer term, small-group support in specific topics.
How does a student qualify to become a tutor?
We welcome all students to become tutors as long as they can show content mastery in at least one math topic through our video-based certification system. After that, we'll give them all the support they need to learn how to run a tutoring session, including an interactive training, an onboarding buddy to support them in their first sessions, and ongoing feedback from experienced tutors.
How does a student qualify for free tutoring?
All students who are at least 13 are welcome to get free help!
What can students expect when they sign up for free tutoring?
To get started, students will complete a 5-minute registration that helps us better understand their tutoring needs. As soon as they've completed this process, they'll have access to to get homework help every weekday evening. After their account has been approved, they also be able to sign up to join small-group review sessions on specific topics for extra support.
What subject areas are available?
High school math (pre-algebra to Calculus) and SAT test preparation.
What times are available?
Live homework help is available from 4-7pm PST and topic-based sessions are offered at a variety of times around the clock.
Is Schoolhouse safe?
Safety is our top priority as we connect students and tutors. You can review a full summary of our safety mechanisms here. Here are a few highlights:
- Tutor Barrier to Entry & Training - All tutors must invest in completing a multi-hour certification and training process before they can run their first session. During this training process, they're given clear expectations for how to create a safe environment for students.
- Session Recording and Monitoring - Not only do we record every tutoring session, but we have a dedicated team of trained volunteers who regularly review recordings for safety and quality flags.
- Community Reporting - All community members are given a safe place to report any behavior that violates our community guidelines.
