AP Chem Kickoff Series: Building the Basics

2nd session

Starting AP Chem this year? This series will help you get a strong foundation. 🥰Across four sessions, we’ll move step by step through the first units — beginning with moles and measurements, then covering atomic structure, periodic trends, and finally valence electrons and ionic bonding.

Each session will include a short review of the key ideas, practice with AP-style questions, and time to ask questions. The focus is on making the core concepts clear and building confidence with the kinds of problems you’ll see in class and on the exam.

You can join any session on its own or attend the whole series — either way, you’ll come away more confident with the fundamentals of AP Chemistry 🥰

Atomic Structure and Properties

4th session

Hello! If you are reading this, you may be someone interested in learning more about the following topics in Chemistry: Moles and molar masses, empirical and molecular formula, percent purity, combustion analysis, mass percent, mixtures, mass spectrometry, electron configuration, periodic trends, and valence electrons and ionic compounds, and PES (photoelectron spectroscopy). These are all the topics that will be covered in our meetings, each being 3 hours long and once a week. Meetings will be held Mondays at 3:30 P.M. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time). Furthermore, I will also be posting sessions as we go along the way. You only see 2 sessions now because as the series progresses, more sessions will be added according to how the class and I feel concerning moving forward. Once all topics have been fully covered and reviews have been done, I will end the series.

Meetings will be broken up as following:
5 minutes waiting for late learners and icebreakers sometimes

25 minutes reviewing content or material from last session. For the first session, this will be substituted for getting to know the learners better and smoothly transitioning into the main topic of the session

1 hour and 30 minutes discussing problems whether that is through Khan Academy, Quizzizz (now called Wayground), or a mix of both (I tend to use the AP Chemistry quizzes on Khan Academy to guide discussion).

The remaining hour will be used for Q&A, homework assistance, or practice AP Chemistry FRQ’s and MCQ’s relating to atomic structure and properties. For homework assistance, please refrain from sharing any personally identifiable information on the document in question. This includes your school’s name, teacher’s name, your full name, or your school’s address. Documents can be shared via Zoom chat. In addition to this, please comply with all rules pertaining to Schoolhouse.world policy.

While I intend for this series to be for anyone interested in Chemistry, I do use a lot of AP Chemistry material. I highly recommend that everyone who joins has taken Algebra 1 or at minimum has knowledge in SI (International System of units) conversions, manipulating algebraic expressions and equations, using significant figures, using scientific notation and using percentages. This part of Chemistry is a lot less math heavy so feel free to join my series, even if you don’t have a lot of math experience. (Note: However true the math part is, a notoriously difficult topic for people who are new to chemistry is electron configuration… I can testify from my own experience. For this reason, it may also help to have knowledge from a physical science class about electrons in atoms as well.).

Background on myself:
-5 on AP Chemistry
-Self studied a majority of Organic Chemistry 1 in the past
-I have been studying Chemistry for about 2 years

4th session

What's this?
This series is just a general series geared to helping anyone with any chemistry questions, and reviewing all chemistry topics needed! Don't hesitate to ask: there are no dumb questions - only dumb answers.
Qualifications?
I got a 5 on the AP Chem Test and have excelled significantly in both Chem Honors and AP Chem in my school, and I often helped peers out with any issues they had.
When?
Usually, I'll have sessions every Monday, but I can adjust that based on what day is most convenient for all my learners. I also might be able to do a quick session if you have a test and you really want to review.

AP Chemistry Review

4th session

Join this series to review AP Chemistry curriculum! We'll start with some fundamental knowledge and then slowly move into the AP curriculum; the goal is to cover all the essential topics in time for the AP Exam in May. We will go in a different unit order than what College Board has posted, but we will still hit all the topics! In addition to going over content, we will talk about methods of studying, helpful resources, and general advice for the class. Every session, we will have time to answer any questions that come up as well. This series will work best if you're currently enrolled in AP Chemistry, but all learners are more than welcome to join! We (Sophia and Ayla, the co-hosts) both have earned As in our classes and scored a 5 on the AP Exam, so we can't wait to share our knowledge with everyone! It'd be great to have you here! 🧪🥼💟

🏅Learn Science Olympiad Forensics from a National Competitor!!

5th session

Welcome! Do you want to participate in a virtual forensics lab? What about learning about why acids like HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) will react with bases specifically? Well then, you're in the right place!

My name is Daniel Chen. I have participated in science olympiad since middle school, and first competed at the national competition as a high school freshman after making it onto my school's varsity team. I made it off of three events, fossils, EV, and forensics! Although I have done well in fossils, I am more passionate and excited about forensics, which is why I am teaching this course!

This workshop will consist of at least 18 total sessions, going into most school years. Each session we will cover a specific topic of forensics, from powders to fibers to fingerprints.

Sessions will be held each week on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 PM EST. Sessions will typically be held to be about 1 hour long although I will usually be perfectly fine with going over if we need to cover some more material, or if there are questions.

Attendance is all up to you! I understand that school can be very stressful, and the mandatory attendance is not ideal. While it is 100% your choice for how you would like to attend sessions, keep in mind that lacking knowledge in some specific parts can be difficult to keep learning down the course, so I would recommend attending the sessions as much as possible.

Here is a full outline of the list of topics we will cover:
Powders
Plastics
Fibers
Hairs
Chromatography
Mass Spectrometry
Fingerprints
DNA
Glass
Entomology
Blood
Seeds and Pollen
Tracks and Soil
Bullet Striations
Analysis
Cheat sheet making
Test Strategies and Planning

Note that some of the topics may require more than one day to fully teach and understand, and that more sessions will be added as the series commences to accommodate for the following topics.

Of course, this course will be very comprehensive, which is why, as science olympiad also allows, we will be making our very own cheat sheet! A cheat sheet, for those who don't know, is a standard letter size paper filled to the brim with information that science olympiad allows competitors to bring and use on tests! When we make our very own cheat sheet, we will pack it with vasts amount of information; for reference, my cheat sheet is currently about size 3.5-4.

Video recordings of lab demonstrations may also be shown later on in the course.

I hope you enjoy your stay at this Science Olympiad Forensics course, and I wish you the best of luck, detective!
