Math Competition Series

2nd session

In this series, we'll be focusing on math competition problems using knowledge relevant to Algebra 2, such as polynomials, logarithms, and trigonometry.

Prerequisite: You should have at least a basic understanding of all Algebra 2 concepts because you will have the opportunity to apply those in novel ways in math competition problems. You are welcome to take a look at the Khan Academy Algebra 2 course to review important skills before each session!

[From an 3x AIME Qualifier] Competition Math

12th session

In this course, we will be going over AMC 8, 10, 12, and AIME content.

Why should you take this course?

Although not necessary for school math, the methods taught in this class can be very beneficial in solving problems in a "smarter" way. This class will teach you tips and tricks schools tend to not teach. From my personal experience, competition math has made school math very easy and offers me much more insight into understanding concepts.

Additionally, competition math can be very helpful in boosting your resume for high school and college. Many of the top schools like MIT ask specifically for your AMC scores, so it will make you stand out from other students.

What will we learn in this course?

The best way to get better at competition math is to do problems, especially those of past AMC tests. While going over past problems, we will spend time learning about the four different categories in math: Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry, and Counting & Probability.

This course will be designed to give you better intuition for AMC problems as well as teach you new formulas and strategies.

How will the classes operate?

A normal class will be a 90-minute session. It is not helpful to listen to me explain solutions for 90 minutes, nor is it helpful to solve just problems for 90 minutes. So, I will give you a few minutes of time to attempt the problem and then we will go over the problem together.
