About
Welcome! Did you know that there was a war in history over some bones? This, literally, was called the "Bone Wars". If you would like to learn even more about fossils, join up!
This session covers a vast variety of fossils that students, whether participating in Science Olympiad Competitions or not, will be shocked to know about!
A quick introduction: My name is Daniel Chen. I have participated in science olympiad since middle school, and first competed at the national competition as a high school freshman after making it onto my school's varsity team. I made it off of three events, fossils, EV, and forensics! I have done well in fossils by getting a top 10 at nationals, and I have also done well in my other events as well!
This workshop consists of at least 20 sessions, going into most school years; Each session we will cover a specific aspect about fossils, ranging from dinosaurs to some of the most primitive creatures ever!
Sessions will typically be held on Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 PM EST. Sessions will typically be an hour long, although I am often able to stay past the designated end of sessions for further review or questions that students may have!
Attendance is all up to you! I understand that school can be very stressful and so mandatory attendance is not ideal. While it is 100% in your control, attendance is still highly recommended to be as complete as possible, as missing some sessions may be harmful to later on learning. However, don't worry if you miss a few sessions; slides and notes will be posted each and every single class.
Note that some of the fossils and topics will be more difficult to understand than others, and so the number of sessions for each topic will vary depending on the subject. Schedules and series will be added and edited as the course commences to accommodate for these varying topics.
This course and topic is also very comprehensive, and so Science Olympiad also allows each and every competitor to bring their own binder of any size to the competition! We will be making our very own binders that we will be able to bring and use on tests.
Some live specimens may also be shown to students as the course continues.
By the end of this course, you will be a true fossils master, and next time you go to a museum, you will be able to tell people about how the T-Rex was not scaly, but rather a little bit feathery!
