About

In this crash course, we'll go over different topics in Algebra 1 each week. We will work towards building our understanding and foundational knowledge/skills about Algebra 1 topics. These topics include solving equations and inequalities, functions, exponential functions, quadratics, etc. There will be a session every week starting November 26, once a week on Saturdays. There will be about 16 sessions, maybe more depending on how many catch-up sessions I have to organize. Catch-up sessions will be held for individuals who couldn't attend the original session. These sessions will only be held if requested. Another thing that is included in every session is why the topic is useful. What I prioritize is learners understanding the use of the topic, rather than just learning about something and not understanding the applications of whatever you're learning. Also, I recommend taking notes as the session progresses to make sure you're focused, and so that you have another resource you could use to study. There are no prerequisites in order to attend this series. Lastly, I will post slideshows in the series group chat as a reference for any information you might need relating to that topic.

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

You are welcome to skip the sessions where you feel that you're comfortable with the topic, however I advise not to miss many. This is because I will be providing lots of resources and information in the session that can further strengthen your abilities as mathematicians.

About the Tutor

Hello! My name is Aqib, and I enjoy playing organized sports, programming, and most of all having fun! I believe that despite what age you are, you're never too old or too young to share what you're passionate about with others. I will do my best to be an active member of the schoolhouse community, to ensure the best experience for not only myself, but also my peers.

Session 1

Orientation

We will get acquainted with one another by introducing ourselves. After all the introductions, you will be given a pre-assessment about Algebra 1. If time permits, we can play a few games, if not then that will conclude the session.

Session 2

Algebra foundations

In this session, we'll cover all the basics that you need to know about Algebra 1. This includes combining like terms, breaking down algebraic word problems, algebraic properties, and evaluating expressions.

Session 3

Solving equations & inequalities

In this session, we'll cover how to solve equations with variables on both sides. Additionally, we'll also analyze the number of solutions to linear equations, and learn how to solve equations with unknown coefficients. If time permits, we'll cover multi-step and compound inequalities. If the session ends before we get a chance to cover these topics, then we will cover them in the next session.

Session 4

Inequalities (systems & graphs)

If we haven't covered inequalities in the last session, we'll be sure to do so in the beginning of this one. Afterwards, we'll cover systems of inequalities and graphs. You'll learn how to graph inequalities and how to find the solution to a system of inequalities.

Session 5

Inequalities (systems & graphs)

We'll wrap up anything that we have left to cover about inequalities. Afterwards, we will take a short assessment to render your progress through the topics we have learned so far. If time is in our favor, we can end the session playing games that you guys may request!

Session 6

Review

We will review everything we've learned about inequalities so far! We'll review slides, and do some practice problems!

Session 7

Review

We will review linear equations and graphs.

Session 8

Review

We will review how to solve equations with variables on both sides. If time permits, we'll play some fun math games relating to the topics we've covered in this series so far. This will be our last session before the new year, and second to last session before we start our new unit on linear relationships!! I look forward to seeing you there!

Session 9

Inequalities (systems & graphs)

We will learn how to graph inequalities! Afterwards, we will create goals for ourselves to act as motivators for the new year.

Session 10

Linear equations & graphs

We will learn how to identify linear equations, and how to graph linear equations. Additionally, we will learn what certain linear equations mean in specific situations, and how we can apply that knowledge to help us solve the problem. Lastly, I will cover how we can evaluate and convert linear equations into certain forms that may help us solve a given problem.

Session 11

Linear equations & graphs

We will review linear equations and graphs, and cover any information that is needed in order to truly master the topic. Study resources will also be provided for the upcoming assessment on January 21st, which will test how well you've attained all the information that has been provided thus far in this series.
