About

Hello everyone! This series is for students who are currently taking an algebra-based physics class or studying it independently. Each week over the course of this semester, we'll answer physics questions from Khan Academy's High School Physics page: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/hs-physics I will also answer any homework questions or other doubts that students have!

Welcome to the first session. We'll talk about mechanics (the study of motion). Practice with position, displacement, speed, velocity, and acceleration. We'll also talk about the difference between a vector and a scalar, and how to add vectors.

Continued study of mechanics, especially the 5 kinematic equations for solving problems where there is constant acceleration: Vf = Vi + a*t Xf - Xi = Vi*t + 1/2*a*t^2 Xf - Xi = Vf*t - 1/2*a*t^2 Xf - Xi = 1/2 (Vi + Vf) Vf^2 = Vi^2 + 2a(Xf-Xi) (Note: i means initial and f means final. Some teachers use different notations to write these equations: zero or naught also means initial)

Continued study of dynamics: This week, we'll talk more about forces as the cause of motion. We'll look at the properties of some contact and non-contact forces, including gravity, normal force, friction, and tension. I'll also demonstrate how to draw and analyze free body diagrams. Feel free to bring homework questions!

More about electricity and magnetism. We'll also compare and contrast Coulomb's law with Newton's law of universal gravitation: Why DO those two equations look so tantalizingly similar?

Work and Energy: What is energy, and in what forms can it exist? How can we use energy conservation principles to help us solve problems about motion of objects? We'll also compare the energy conservation approach to solving problems with kinematic equations: it's often possible to use either approach, so how can you decide which to use and why?

An introduction to waves. What are waves? Where (other than the ocean!) do waves occur, and how do they help us understand electromagnetism?
