About

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a proven national program designed to support and assist all students to succeed in a college preparatory path for admission to universities and colleges.

Who is an AVID Student? AVID students are students in the academic middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically. In the identification process a number of criteria are considered, including: State Test Scores, Grades, Citizenship, Attendance, Desire and Determination, First in Family to Attend College, Historically Underrepresented in 4-year Colleges, Economically Disadvantaged, and Other Special Circumstances.

AVID students must:
Enroll in an AVID elective class
Enroll in one or more advanced academic class (Pre-AP or AP at the High School level and honors classes at the Middle Level) each semester maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes
Maintain the AVID binder with assignment/grade record sheets and daily notes in all classes
Complete all homework assignments and commit to studying every night

What AVID Is Not:
a remedial program
a free ride
a school within a school
a quick fix

Proven Effectiveness: 76% of AVID seniors are from a low socioeconomic status background, and 86% are underrepresented students. Nevertheless, they outperform their peers in crucial metrics nationwide.

94% complete 4 year college entrance requirements.
90% of people who apply are accepted into 4 year colleges
84% who enroll in college persist into the second year

Hi, I’m Christopher! I’m passionate about music (especially playing the trombone in concert band), nonviolence advocacy, and inspiring the next generation through education. I’m working toward a future career in elementary teaching because I believe every student deserves support, encouragement, and opportunities to succeed. At Schoolhouse, I tutor in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, History, and Computer Science. I’m also a Senior Tutor in Reading/Writing and Enrichment, a Tutor Host helping other tutors grow, and a Dialogue Club President, where I lead discussions that bring students together from around the world. Outside of Schoolhouse, I enjoy creative writing (I’ve even been published!), exploring science and astronomy, and composing music. Leadership and service are important to me—I’ve helped launch student-led organizations promoting inclusion, safety, and community wellness. I believe in lifelong learning, curiosity, and creating safe spaces where people can grow. I’m excited to keep learning with you here at Schoolhouse!
