About

Hi there! I know this isn't a conventional course, but if you're here, something drew you to it, so I welcome you! We'll go through key historical developments of queer movements, learn multi-dimensional frameworks to study queerness, get exposure to a wide array of sources focusing on queer voices and visibility, and have discussions in a safe space about queer history and its modern implications to ultimately gain background knowledge necessary to have conversations about topics that are still stigmatized, excluded, erased, or ignored today. You can expect to participate in a lot of different activities to learn (maybe even about yourself!) and engage with others. I won't ever lecture for the whole time--I want to incorporate time for us to talk about what we learn; that's the point of this course! :)

Tutor Qualifications

My most relevant experience is an internship I did studying gender & sexuality this past year, and honors history courses in school that covered related topics. Otherwise, this is just a general passion of mine and something I am constantly researching and learning more about in my free time!

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

You are free to attend/skip whichever sessions you want :) Come to any session you're interested in, but I also suggest you come to sessions you might not be interested in at first because you'll learn something new! I will definitely incorporate breaks so no worries if the hour time slot seems a bit daunting!

My name is Mina, and I’m a rising senior in high school here tutoring the SAT Reading & Writing Section and LGBTQ+ Studies📚 Learning has been a lifelong passion of mine, and I firmly believe everyone deserves access to quality education and people who see and encourage their potential, and that is why I’m here🙃 My other passions include art, social justice, mental health awareness, history, community organizing, and writing!

What exactly is gender? What sexualities exist besides straight, gay, or bi? We'll learn the basics of gender & sexuality like terms and different models, then watch videos from people speaking about their own genders or sexualities, and discuss!

It's '60s time! We'll look at a critical moment in LGBTQ+ history where social and antiwar movements during '60s America paved the way for Stonewall in 1969, what is widely considered as the starting point of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Everything Stonewall: we'll cover the basic facts and context surrounding the riots, and debate whether it is fair for this to be considered the start of the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Building on our Stonewall meeting, we’ll learn how Stonewall led to the creation of Pride, and explore how it has changed over time. We’ll also touch on safety tips and other advice for attending Pride celebrations!

Is there a gay gene? Are queer parents better at raising kids? What research has been done on hormone replacement therapy? In this class, we’ll look into some science as it relates to LGBTQ+ people!

"Homosexuality is a sin..." A lot of homophobic rhetoric in the modern day involves religion. We talked about science last time, and this time we’ll see how pseudoscience was used to justify things like conversion camps. We'll particularly look at '80s America, the development of the religious right, and how LGBTQ+ identity and religion became even more politicized.

LGBTQ+ science, continued - we'll cover the AIDS crisis: how it became seen as a "gay" disease, which communities were disproportionately affected, the American government's response, and community organizations that formed during this time. We'll discuss how this continues to affect us today, including connections to monkeypox.

ART, FILM & MEDIA: How has queer representation changed over the years? What problems still exist today? We'll talk about ‘80s street art, the significance of queer art in the LGBTQ+ movement, queer-coding in film, problematic LGBTQ+ movie tropes, and queer-baiting.

LGBTQ+ MEDIA RECOMMENDATIONS - Ending on a happy note, we'll look at some shows, movies, books, etc. with actually good queer representation! Feel free to bring in your own recommendations, because I will have a lot!

GOODBYES - We’ll reflect on our time together and learn how to create safe spaces and find queer communities moving forward :)
