About

This course is designed specifically for students planning to take the ACT test and want to work on the math skills they need for it. However, students who need to revise some topics for school or are planning to take the SAT can also benefit from the course. Over the next few months, we will meet weekly to discuss all of the important math concepts and strategies you need to do well on the ACT. In every session, we will tackle a few topics. We will revise them and solve some practice questions. I will also be taking any math questions you might have throughout the session. I plan to adapt the course and the time allocated to each topic based on the needs of the students. _____________________________________________ The course will be divided into parts; each part will be placed in its corresponding subworld: 1. Pre-Algebra 2. Algebra 1 3. Geometry 4. Statistics & Probability 5. Algebra 2 6. Pre-calculus _____________________________________________ RESOURCES i USE: -The Ultimate Guide to ACT Math (1 and 2) - The Official ACT Prep Guide 2022-2023 - 500 ACT Math Questions to Know by Test Day, 3rd Edition, Geometry Common Core. - The Official ACT Mathematics Guide (This list is subject to change as I get to learn what the students need more of.) _____________________________________________ QUALIFICATIONS I got a 36 on the math ACT section in July of 2022. I have a GPA of 4.0 in pre-algebra, algebra one, geometry, and algebra 2, and calculus. I am taking AP Calculus AB this year. I am certified in geometry, pre-algebra, and algebra 1. I am gaining certification in any other relevant math topics. I have already taught this course twice before and gained experience in teaching the material and insight on how to improve it. (I also used the courses of Princeton Review, Prepscholar, and Kaplan in preparing for ACT math, in addition to books like the Ultimate Guide to ACT Math, so I have a comprehensive understanding of all the topics that should be covered.) _____________________________________________ FEEDBACK Some of the feedback I got on my previous ACT Math courses: "The practice questions were just what I needed, also the tutor was very engaging." "Thanks for making it interactive and you were really dedicated." "Very good and thorough explanations." part of a peer-review: "Excellent explanations! You went over each concept in detail and thoroughly explained how to solve the problems. You not only explained how to find the correct answer but also why a certain approach makes sense. "

I am a senior who values education and enjoys learning and teaching! I am Jordanian, but I attend an international school in Saudi Arabia. My favorite subject at school is biology though chemistry and math are close seconds. I had a GPA of 4.0 in my junior year including an A+ in Math, which included Algebra II and Calculus. I ranked first in my junior year (my school had about 200 junior students). I have taken the ACT test twice and scored a 34 in the first trial and a 35 in the second. I have a super score of 36! I also self-studied AP Biology in 2022 and scored a 5 on the AP Biology test. However, when my school started a 2-year AP Biology program last year, I joined it because of my love for biology (and it was the most challenging biology course being offered at my school). In 2023, I took an AP Chemistry course offered by Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth because my school does not offer AP Chemistry. I received an A in the course and a 5 on the AP test! I have also taken an "Introduction to Epidemiology" course offered by UC San Diego in which I received an A+. I also worked on a research project with the International Research Institute of North Carolina. As to English proficiency, in addition to attending international schools since kindergarten, I have scored 119/120 on the TOEFL test in 2023. I have been tutoring at Schoolhouse for over a year now and have enjoyed tutoring and learned greatly from my experience. I hope to continue sharing my knowledge and helping others during my senior year.

Orientation

Thu 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM UTCSep 21, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM UTC

I will introduce myself and we will talk about the ACT math test in general and my plans for the course. I will talk about the topics covered in it as described by the ACT themselves in their books and give some tips for preparing and taking the test. I will hear any questions or requests you might have. I will be adding more sessions!

Fractions

Thu 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM UTCSep 28, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM UTC

Ignore the topic. Factors and multiples are only part of what we will discuss, but I just had to choose one from the list! Numbers In this session, we will talk about the classification of all real numbers as well as what it means for a number to be odd or even, prime or composite. We will look at related questions and discuss strategies that can help you solve them. We will also touch on prime factorization. Then, we will move to talking about fractions, mixed numbers, and remainders. We will revise how different operations are performed with fractions and see how remainders are asked about in word problem (modelling) questions.

Exponents intro and order of operations

Exponents intro and order of operations

Thu 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTCOct 5, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTC

Order of operations, Scientific notation, & Percentages We will discuss the order of operations and how it appears in questions. We will then talk about how numbers can be converted to scientific notation and how a number in scientific notation can be returned to standard form. After some simple practice involving such conversions, we will solve ACT-style questions involving scientific notation. Finally, we will start talking about percentages. We will discuss what percentages are and what are the different methods by which we can find percentages or a number (part or whole) of something given the percentage. There will probably be a small part of the percentages left that we will discuss next time. The topic does not accurately describe what we will be discussing. For example, we will not be talking about exponents in detail. I have a limited number of options to choose a title from, so I choose whatever is closest.

Percentages

Thu 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTCOct 12, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM UTC

Percentages & Averages This is our last session in pre-algebra. We will use it to complete our discussion of percentages. We will discuss calculating the percent change and take some practice questions similar to the level and style of the ACT test questions. We will then discuss arithmetic averages and how the average and average change can be calculated. I will give you tips for dealing with questions about finding the average, and we will look at some of the types of questions related to averages. In the next session, we will start with Algebra I. You can find the second part of this course in the Algebra I subworld. I’ll see you there!
