Series Details

About

This series is an introduction to the marvelous game of chess. It's intended for new players who are looking to learn some basic strategy in the opening, midgame, and endgame. If you have an ELO rating (or chess.com) rating of over 1000, then this course will be mostly a review for you. The first half of this series will go over strategy and the second half will be me reviewing and commentating on your chess games.

Tutor Qualifications

My chess ratings are:

1600 chess.com rapid/blitz

1800 Lichess blitz, 2000 Lichess rapid

I've been playing chess for almost a decade. I've also taken lessons from many experienced chess players so I know the basic structure of a chess camp.

✋ ATTENDANCE POLICY

Try not to miss any sessions or else you'll fall behind! And everyone else in the class will likely have an advantage against you ;). If you miss too many sessions, you will be removed from the course.

Session 2

Enrichment

I will go over the fundamentals of chess. This class will mostly focus on identifying threats, trading, and general opening/midgame strategies.

Session 3

Enrichment

This class will focus on the opening, which I believe is the most important part of the game. A strong opening allows for stronger attacks and stronger defense in the midgame. I will go over general opening strategies and strong openings for both white and black. I may also cover some cheesy opening traps that are fun to win with ;)

Session 4

Enrichment

This class will focus on common, but powerful strategies for winning material, including forks, double attacks, discovered checks, and pins/skewers. I will show example games to demonstrate how these strategies can be used in attacking and avoided while defending.

Session 5

Enrichment

This session will focus on attacking the king in the midgame. After all, the king is the most important piece, and the game ends when the king falls. I will show the venomous fishing pole trap as well as example games where the king is attacked on the kingside, the middle, and the queenside.

Session 6

Enrichment

This class will focus on the endgame, which I think is the most difficult part of the game to play. I will start by quickly going over fundamental checkmates before going on to endgame strategy.

Session 7

Enrichment

I will spend the entire class going over your games (so please send me some through messaging or email). I will commentate on things you did well, things your opponent did well, and things both players missed or can improve on.
