What do I do if a learner misses my session?

Updated this week

It's normal for learners to sometimes miss session(s) as scheduling conflicts and extenuating circumstances may come up. Remember that learners have agreed to follow this attendance policy.

  • Learners will primarily use the “Submit Excused Absence” button on the series page to share when they can’t make it. If learners reach out to you in the chat, make sure to direct them to use this feature. You can share this FAQ with the learner. As a tutor, you will be able to see Upcoming Excused Absences on your series “Members” page.

  • If a learner does miss a session (excused or unexcused), you should message them to check in and ask them to use the Session Makeup Guide to catch up on the content they missed.

Best Practice: Know that it’s normal for learners to not show up every time! All we can do is welcome / encourage our learners through chat, build relationships with them during sessions, and follow up after if they need extra support. The bootcamps are structured so that each daily curriculum can function independently of the other days. Please still do your best to include learners who miss days in all the upcoming activities.

Policy Note: Learners who repeatedly miss required sessions without submitting an excused absence will be temporarily suspended from the Schoolhouse platform. This means they will also be removed from any series they are currently enrolled in. To regain access, suspended learners must complete a short training. After completing the training, they may be able to rejoin their original series—depending on space availability.
