Why did I receive a "Not Helpful" rating?

Receiving a "Not Helpful" rating can be disheartening but it's important to remember that these ratings are not a judgement of your abilities as a tutor but rather information about how your learner experienced the session. Here are some insights and tips on how to approach and understand these ratings when you receive them:

Occasionally, learners leave specific comments along with their ratings. For example, “Please solve more numerical problems and go a bit faster.” This type of feedback can be constructive and you can decide whether to adjust your approach based on these comments or maintain your current pace if it suits the overall needs of your class (for example, you may be moving at an intentionally slower pace because it's a class for beginners).
Often, learners do not provide detailed feedback. This lack of context can make it difficult to understand their perspective. It could be due to a mismatch between their expectations and the session's content or perhaps the material was too easy or too hard for them. In these cases, try not to stress over it too much.
Occasionally, you might receive a "Not Helpful" rating from someone who didn't even attend the session. This can happen and it's best to disregard these anomalies.

Remember, everyone at Schoolhouse receives "Not Helpful" ratings from time to time. It’s part of the process and doesn’t impact your ability to keep tutoring or your standing on the platform.

Support and continuous improvement are key aspects of effective tutoring and how we grow, as tutors, here at Schoolhouse. Use the feedback you receive as a tool for growth, reflecting on it to identify actionable steps that can enhance your sessions. However, remember that not all feedback will be relevant or applicable to your teaching style or the needs of your class, so don’t let it discourage you. If you feel uncertain about the feedback or need additional support, please don't hesitate to reach out to a coach -- you can find a list of available coaches here.
