Reading Discussions
2nd session
Each week, a bit of text will be assigned from a book, and we will go over some themes and questions.
The book is Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. It is John Perkins’s personal account of how he was recruited into a global system designed to expand U.S. political and economic influence. He describes working as a consultant who traveled to developing countries and created highly optimistic economic forecasts that encouraged those nations to accept massive loans for infrastructure projects. These loans often pushed countries into heavy debt, making them more dependent on the United States and its allies, while benefiting large corporations.

Every story has layers — beyond the characters and plot are deeper messages about life, society, and human nature. In this session, we’ll explore how authors use symbols (like light, colors, or nature) to express themes such as identity, freedom, and morality.
We’ll practice close reading techniques to identify these patterns, discuss what they represent, and connect them to the story’s larger meaning. Whether you love reading or want to strengthen your literary analysis skills for class, this session will help you see stories in a whole new way ✨

Reading, Analyzing, and Discussing Philosophical Texts
This is the 🔥FIRST EVER READING SERIES WHERE WE BLEND READING & WRITING WITH PHILOSOPHY🔥 in Schoolhouse! Contains 🔥INTENSIVE READING BEFORE SESSIONS and INTENSIVE DISCUSSING IN SESSIONS! It will be a 🔥great way to boost your reading & writing skills🔥 from SAT to physics, and will also 🔥help quench your thirst for philosophic discussion🔥.
Here you can:
- improve your reading comprehension skills and your proficiency in using logic -- both of which are essential for the SAT -- through reading and discussing selected primary texts by notable philosophers of a diverse span across time and topic, using beginner-friendly anthologies (collections of primary texts) as a guide.
- learn about how to write argumentative texts and how to argue effectively, again by learning from past philosophers.
- learn to appreciate texts and literature
- improve debate skills through the discussions, and gain a basic but high-coverage understanding of philosophy to aid you in producing powerful, thoughtful, and persuasive arguments!
Sessions will start with short lectures by the tutor(s) on the basics of the primary text of the session. Here, we will discuss the readings and cover reading comprehension through Q&A and check-your-understanding comprehension questions. Then, the remaining portion of time will be devoted to guided/moderated, Socratic discussions on the primary text, where participants can present their ideas and arguments and interact with each other.
Reading all of the selected text before the sessions is suggested for the best experience. We will also read excerpts from the text for discussion purposes.

AP English Language Course Companion
7th session
AP Lang can be tough with the amount of concepts you need to learn! I remember being super overwhelmed at the beginning of the year, and I would have loved to have had extra support. I got a 5 on my AP exam, but I couldn't have done it without tutoring, so I wanted to help others who are worried about taking the course or just want to increase their knowledge. I will be using the College Board curriculum as well as resources my teacher used and extra things I did myself when studying! This course will go throughout the school year.
Here is what we will be learning:
1. Rhetorical Situation: Reading
Explain how writers’ choices reflect the components of the rhetorical situation.
2. Rhetorical Situation: Writing
Make strategic choices in a text to address a rhetorical situation.
3. Claims and Evidence: Reading
Identify and describe the claims and evidence of an argument.
4. Claims and Evidence: Writing
Analyze and select evidence to develop and refine a claim.
5. Reasoning and Organization: Reading
Describe the reasoning, organization, and development of an argument.
6. Reasoning and Organization: Writing
Use organization and commentary to illuminate the line of reasoning in an argument.
7. Style: Reading
Explain how writers’ stylistic choices contribute to the purpose of an argument.
8. Style: Writing
Select words and use elements of composition to advance an argument.
I will also go over anything complicated that I struggled with or that you guys need assistance with! I'll also do reviews when test day gets close :)
I'm excited to get to know you and help you ace your AP Lang test!

✍️⭐ Crafting Captivating Narratives ✍️⭐
9th session
There are only 15 slots available for each version of this series, so register quickly! To make sure the series can be hosted, we need at least 5 learners registered by the start date.
This six-week series is perfect for our narrative writers of all levels, whether aspiring or professional.
Through the power of the Narrative Arc, we'll learn how we can shape stories to give the reader choice. And for what could be the first time ever, we'll have the option to use the second perspective in our writing.
Make sure to come prepared with access to Google services such as Google Docs and Google Slides, as well as access to Schoolhouse Assessments (built in). That's all you need!
This series serves as the first part to the Creative Writing Sequence I will be hosting. There will be two possible paths, and several available courses.
Please request make-up sessions through this form at least 24-hours in advance. Sessions will be hosted with 1 or more learners, so request as needed.
Note: This series will be fast paced. My availability is really limited, so in order to finish within the ten week margin, if I am unable to host both days, or you are forced to miss both weekly sessions, slides and a review activity will be made available in the assessments folder for your convenience! 🙂
Extra Note: If you've already completed the series, I recommend that you still register again. The main group will be going further than the last times this has been hosted, and there will be both extra enrichment opportunities, and the chance to "teach the group."
Additionally, if you've completed the series priorly, you're welcome to apply as a co-host! I'd love to have you.
📏 Session Length: Estimate around 6 sessions and up to 4 office hour sessions within a span of 10 weeks. Dates and times are tentative.

Let me know if you are interested in participating, but the times and/or dates don't work out for you. I may be willing to make an adjustment.
